What do I do now?** A: I just received my gorrillapod, take a penny or dime and unscrew that screw on the top and the one that fits the camera is under that one, I think they put that on there to keep the screw that fits the camera from pushing through the bottom. **Q: do you need optional ball head?** A: Technically you don't need the optional ball head. You can mount your camera on the GorillaPod and adjust the flexible tripod legs to ensure your camera is level. That being said, it's a bit time consuming having to adjust the flexible legs to get your camera level for each shoot. So, having the optional ballhead is an advantage. In my opinion, I would include the optional ballhead. I have it and I recommend it. Hope this helps! **Q: Is it waterproof?** A: There are no electronics in the tripod so I'm not sure what you're asking. It's plastic and metal... it will get wet, but then it will dry. **Q: Is there a trick/tip to mounting this to vertical pole so that it stays secure?** A: No trick - The legs are flexible enough to 'cling' to anything - a vertical pole or what have you. It's also strong enough for a midsize dSLR with not so very heavy lens. This particular piece is quite sturdy and flexible at the same time. Look at some youtube videos and you will know for sure.
