Do they have to be mounted on the wall ? can i mount them in the hall ? are they big or really small ? should i purchase them at all ?

They do not have to be mounted on the wall, and yes, you can mount them in the hall. They are big and they are small, yes you should purchase not just one, you should purchase them all

How do you charge batteries?

First of all you need to read about the product you've purchased! It doesn't charge batteries. It holds them and has a portable devise that checks to see if the batteries are usable. That is all that it does.

Can the cover be removed for easier access to batteries when stored in a drawer?

The cover on my uni actually snapped off (one of the latches broke). I actually ended up getting a different battery storage case.
