Hi there, it's Michael, the author. You might know my previous book, The Coaching Habit. It was an unexpected bestseller: more than 700,000 copies sold so far, 1,000+ 5-star reviews on desertcart (my favourite: "I have plodded through many books that wish they could be this book"), a Wall Street Journal bestseller, and used by people and organizations around the world. So I've been sweating on the follow-up. The pressure! The anticipation! But here it is, and I think you're going to like it. If The Coaching Habit says, "here are the seven essential questions to be more coach-like," The Advice Trap is about getting to grips with how to actually change your behaviour so you stay curious a little bit longer. It sounds like it should be easy, but it's not. You have to tame your Advice Monster, that part of you that jumps in to offer up ideas, opinions, suggestions and advice. And it's taming your Advice Monster that's at the heart of this book. But there are also some specific coaching strategies, particularly on how to focus on what matters most. There are tools to make your conversations, coaching and otherwise, irresistible. There are even resources beyond the book itself, including a one-year, free leadership program from a 52-person faculty of cool, diverse, and provocative thinkers. In 2019, I was named the #1 Thought Leader in Coaching, and was short-listed for the coaching award by Thinkers50, the "Oscars of Management." My work's been featured in journals such as HBR, Fast Company, Forbes, and Inc., and my company, Box of Crayons, has trained more than 100,000 people just like you in the tools and mindset required for this essential leadership behaviour: being more coach-like. You'll get all of that wisdom and experience when you read The Advice Trap. I'm pretty sure you'll find it a great investment of your money and time. (And, by the way, thank you in advance for buying it. I'm thrilled to know the book is going out into the world.) Review: Must read for leader - Good book to read for every leader Review: Simple and practical. - As I expected, a practical book (again) by MBS.

Best book you can read on how to be a decent human being. Everyone should own and read it!
Michael's second book is such a find: this is transformational, easy-reading and well-written. His style is insightful and witty. The book itself is such a useful tool for anyone who wants to ensure their relationships with others are valuable, humble and curious. Read this and you and your team will do your best work. To call it a leadership book seems a bit of a misnomer, as there's too many books branded the next big thing or to make you the world's best leader. This is more fundamental than that. It reminds you to be a decent human being, through curiosity and humility, by truly listening and through nurturing better habits. You'll feel empowered, happy and ironically if you're a 'save me' like me (read it!)... you'll finally reach your goal to be helpful, sometimes, simply by shutting up!

My Advice? Read this book!
I’ve owned this book since it first came out. Started it right away, couldn’t get into it for whatever reason, and put it on a shelf for a few months. I picked it up again a couple weeks ago and am so glad I did. “The Coaching Habit” is one of the most influential books I’ve ever read and so my expectations were exceedingly high for MBS’s follow-up. As one who has long struggled with sucking up others’ responsibilities and indulging the Advice Monster far too often, I believe deeply in the power and significance of the coach approach. As with the Coaching Habit, I value the simple, practical wisdom that fills these pages and that the writing challenges me to not only think better, but to be better. I am better off for having read these pages and that in itself is the sign of a world class book.

Awesome great book full of insights!
Got this book because I sometimes feel the need to always provide advice. The truth is, I really don't like giving because many times I realised others already have something in mind. So this book unravels what I've always been struggling with and provides great insights on how to overcome the "advice monster" in me.
