Q: If this is truly a wind up clock, can someone please explain to me why a standard battery is required?

No battery required. This is an error in the listing. Clock will run at least 24 hours on one winding. Very loud bell ringer. Clock has fast/slow adjustment and may need some adjustments to keep time, out of the box. A fully wound clock will keep better time, than one that is partially wound up. For best accuracy, you can't beat a battery-operated quartz movement, but for waking up, a mechanical bell ringer is louder.

Q: Where's it made? i've given up buying anything made in china since everything i buy made there i seem to have to replace a year or two later.

It's made in China and I've used it regularly for a year with the alarm function. It works well, but is difficult to wind as the cranks on the back are small and very close together. Overall I got what I paid for, but no bonuses.
