How sturdy are the pockets?

The pockets are sturdy. The plastic is thick.

What are the spiral binders made of? Plastic? Metal?

The spirals are made of plastic. However, they seem very durable. I love mine and use it all the time.

How many pages will fit in each pocket?

It holds a lot of pages, but when you fill each pocket with 10-15 pages each, the binder becomes overloaded.

How thick is the spiral? Could I take folders out and keep the spiral to have only 6 folders?

The spiral is compact -- only 1/2" in diameter. It is a continuous wind to prevent pockets from falling out so they would be a little difficult to remove. You could, however cut the dividers out. There are 12 dividers with a pocket on each side for a total of 24 pockets. Because it is compact, I personally would leave the unused pockets in. Hope this helps.
