I also read the fiction book she co-wrote, Little Miss Evil. Very funny and clever writer! Although I don't agree that college students should pursue a career they don't necessarily like just to make the most money possible early in their lives so they can then escape the crummy job/rat race, I found the financial advice in this book very helpful and practical. I particularly appreciate the advice for after you have saved a lot of money and can quit your job. (For some reason, it's hard to find that information. Most books focus on the saving phase.) I've met a lot of people that pursue careers and promotions just for the money and hate their lives. IMO, they also tend to be mediocre/dispassionate/sometimes mean-spirited at their jobs. I don't think that it's necessary to grind and be miserable like that. I pursued a career in the Liberal Arts that I loved but that didn't promise a lot of money. I had some modest student loans to pay off. While there were some lean years at first (particularly in grad school and for a year or two after my PhD) and the career has not been a straight line, the salary has gone way up and I've saved enough to retire early. The trick is to make a decent living while doing something you enjoy and saving as much as you can.
