I like it more each time I use it.
This item was delivered to my house a few days before the estimated time of arrival which made me happy. The shipping crate had an interesting "tilt" indicator which showed the crate had not been dropped or laid on a side. The only thing I did not initially like about this machine was the crudely finished surfaces on that jointer table. As noted by another reviewer the table surface has a wavy grooved texture. I found some areas of this to be so rough it pulled the fibers out of the cleaning cloth I was using to remove the protective coating. The distal end of the table seemed to have a rough bur on it that made it harder to push boards across. I finally took my sander and file and went over the entire surface. After that and a couple coats of wax the jointer surface is almost as nice as my more polished table saw surface. Due to the rough finish of table surfaces I was going to give this machine only 4 stars, but that was over a month ago and I've been using it so much I had almost forgotten my initial reaction to it. I'm giving the machine 5 stars now based on how it works and the product that comes out it. The boards I've jointed and planed have had no problems, the machine works just like it is supposed to. I did not have to do any adjustments and could use the factory settings without any problems. The thing I like best about this machine is how fast I can switch from jointer to planer. I can easily do this in less than 30 seconds. That is less time it took me to pull out and set up my portable planer. This machine replaces a 6" jointer and 12" portable planer I had been using for years. Before buying the Jet I was concerned that I already had a 12" planer so why get another. Even though I think the portable 12" planer gave a nicer finish, I find the Jet combo machine easier and faster to use (and much better dust collection design). One other thing I found I like about this Jet is the space it takes up is less than specified in the product description. I found I can remove the blade guard and slide the jointer fence to cover the blade, thus reducing that dimension considerably. I would like a nice mobile base for it. Right now I keep it on a Jet pallet truck I had bought for a different purpose. My workshop space is extremely limited so every square foot of space is needed. I haven't needed to change the blades yet, so maybe I'll comment on that in the future.

An engineer's take
Bought this to replace a Dewalt DW733 planer and Jet 6" jointer. Use will be small amateur to semi pro (but not production) shop. Purchased from local dealer as special order. This model has the straight knife cutterhead. I chose this because i sharpen my own blades. Also purchased the 708119 (1200 lbs rated) mobile base. My initial impressions: I like this machine because of the space savings in a small shop and also it means i sharpen one set of knives for both jointer and planer. Also its great to now be able to joint 8 - 10" boards. Of all other models i researched it has the simplest (quickest) changeover from jointer to planer. I like that the cutterhead & feed roller mechanism can be fully exposed (by raising jointer tables) and so easily accessed for maintenance. Machine is easily (for those that are so inclined) disassembled for servicing or moving. There is no oil filled gearbox to worry about. ALL tables CAN BE adjusted to dial in the machine using a dial indicator. Manual has instructions and all the bolts / hex screws are well accessible for this. Jointer tables stay as adjusted once the locks are engaged. Unit fits snugly on the 708119 base after cutting two of the bars for the base in half. Was not even necessary to lock the wheels for small jointing operation. Rolls away nicely into the same space that the Jet 6" jointer used to fit. I don't care for the finish on the tables. This looks like some cost saving rough grind at the china factory. Nevertheless they are flat within 0.003" . The casting seems not as high quality as my other Jet machines. I used 180 grit with WD40 to achieve an acceptable smoothness on all the tables then waxed to fill the pores as much as possible. Best also to make sub base for the planer table with melamine or laminate ply. I removed the motor to lighten the frame for lifting off my pickup. Motor looks VERY cheaply made. I hope it lasts some appreciable time. Nevertheless it runs well and there is no excessive bearing noise. Blades are supplied with quite a rough grind so the finish on the wood shows this in the form of barely visible lines. Jointer operation seems quite good. For me fence is perfect - tall, lightweight (aluminium), no bulky mechanism and easy to adjust / remove. Planer dust collection is not as good as i would like ( using 1200 cfm unit). I expect that there would be some sweeping to do if i plane more than a few boards. Also markings on planer table handwheel do not show inches.... looks like mm or something arbitrary. Finish from the planer is not what i'm accustomed to from the Dewalt 733. "Cup" marks are visible and again like i mentioned with the rough ground blades. However, NO SNIPE which is fantastic ! The serrated infeed roller marks the wood if too light a pass is taken. Maybe will try to reduce pressure on this roller. Of course it doesn't SCREAM like the lunchbox planers do... this is great for me. In summary i'm happy now with this bigger machine. However, if i were in a country where some of the other options were more available (Grizzly, Laguna, Felder) i would definitely choose those over this machine....I expect the higher price tag of these will come with a little better build quality. UPDATE: successfully installed "iGaging 12" Magnetic Remote Digital Readout" ... see photos UPDATE2: another CON : fence is NOT accurate over its full range of travel. at one point (where i set it initially) it is 90 deg dead. at a more extended position it drops off by as much as 2deg which shows in jointing result :( :( .. also the fence does not extend over full cutterhead length so it is not possible to edge joint 1" boards on the front edge of the blade and thus alternate jointing positions to even out blade wear.. i hope this is the last drawback i find.... part of me regrets this purchase a little ... UPDATE3: (Jan 2018) . bought and installed byrd cutterhead. No other modification other than replace cutterhead. Machine is now hugely improved. Large reduction in noise. Excellent cut results. Now i can feel a little more confident about having this machine. Fence is still sh*t but i work around this by edge jointing in one position on the tables. Changeover of the cutterheads was very easy for me. No need to remove tables or drive side bearing block. All done from non-drive side. Bought cutterhead from Holbren. UPDATE 4 (Aug 2021) Had motor rewound. Thermal switch on winding burned and damaged winding next to it. Seems my initial suspicions about a cheap motor were correct. Run capacitor also needed replacing - measured at 36uf and should be 50uf. Bearings are ok. Centrifugal switch like new. Nothing more than serious home / hobby shop use till now. Admittedly a little more than usual during last year of lockdown. Failure occurred during jointing first board of the day - i.e machine was cold. Modified cabinet to allow more airflow. Installed good DOL starter with thermal OL relay. Did not replace thermal switch in newly rewound motor windings. Will see how it goes. Still loving the Byrd head.

Long Term Review- Still one of my favorites
I purchased the Jet JJP-12 HH a little over a year ago. If you're considering one you've probably read all kinds of tests, forums and reviews. I'll give you my impressions to add to the mix. I have used the machine enough to have needed to rotate the cutting head 1 time. And that is the first great thing about this tool. If you get the carbide insert head you just loosen up the cutters and turn them 90 degrees and it's ready to go again (takes a bit of patience...there are lot of them). No more fusing with getting the cutter parallel with the table or right depth like my old HSS delta. Next is the footprint. It takes up the same space as my old Delta 6" jointer but gives me a planer too. Nice for a small shop. Really any shop...we all need more room for our toys. I must talk a bit about power. This tool has got it. It easily planes dense hardwood without hesitation. Lastly, is capacity. Moving from a 6" jointer to a 12" is such a joy. Before I was limited to 6" wide boards. I have a nice resaw bandsaw (Laguna) with a 12" resaw capacity but it really did give me much versatility because I could only face plane 6" wide material. Now I after I resaw I can face plane up to the bandsaw capacity and then quickly convert and surface plane it to final thickness. OK, with any tool there are limitations. Here are a couple that you should consider. First this baby get's hot. If you are letting it run for a while doing a lot of surface planing the motor heats up. Enough where you can't leave your hand on the side of the cabinet. I haven't had any problems but it does concern me. The jointer table is short. Part of the compact design is to shorten up the tables. I think it's like 55". A bit longer than my 6" delta but short of a DJ-20 or powermatic. I wish it had a full 72" length table when I have 8 foot long stock. I try and set up rollers but the results are sketchy and less than perfect. If you are doing 5 foot or shorter stock there is no issue and your edges or faces will be true and flat. But longer than that and it starts to get tricky and demands a great deal of technique. Last, I should mention conversion. Really it's a breeze to change from jointer to planer and back. But it is a deterrent. Nothing like face planing a stack of wood and switching to planer mode for thickness planing and realizing you forgot one board and need to convert back. Like any machine it takes some set up and that takes time. One more rant....I don't like the table treatment. Rather than being a fully ground table top they have ground parallel lines in the surface, which is suppose to reduce drag of the stock when you push it through. I haven't found it better and it's harder to keep clean and slick. Overall, no regrets about pulling the trigger on this machine. It has worked tirelessly and allow me to handle wide stock. Essentially it improve the capacity of my other tools.

Great unit - great service.
One week in, so far so good. The unit was rock solid when delivered, had to make a minor adjustment to the fence stops. Other than that it was ready to go. I have this on a PM-2500 stand with two pieces of 3/4" plywood as supports - my shop is too small for each machine to have its own spot. First time through was with a piece of walnut, 5/4 x 6" x 5ft - edged and planed beautifully. If you work with wood often enough you'll be happy with this unit, purchasing rough material at a lumberyard. I'm not going to say it will pay for itself anytime soon, but the results are far superior to what you would purchase at a big box. Not to mention milling rough lumber is a big part of the allure of the hobby as far as I'm cocerned. Assembly was straight-forward - basically removing plastic wrap, cleaning the tables and adding the safety guard. You'll also have to provide a plug - not unusual for a 220+ volt machine. This thing is a heavyweight to move as well, tipping the scales at about 500lbs. Get a friend, preferably someone in shape, to help you handle this. Couple small items of note - the bolt/set-screw for the planar table wheel was lying in the bottom of the crate. Very strange and I'm glad it was there because I hunted through the box of hardware and around the floor for a while looking for it. The other thing is the guard. Don't get me wrong, it functions very well. However, when you're edge-jointing you'll want to move the fence in and out occasionally to balance the wear on the knives. If you're jointing with the fence moved forward (toward the operator), the sliding guard obstructs the operators path when moving along the table - would be nice if this was a telescoping mechanism of some sort. Amazon was, of course, Amazon - great delivery schedule, right on time. Delivered on the day I requested - driver brought it into my garage. I highly recommend this machine and I highly recommend purchasing from Amazon. Cheers!

Ok but has design issues, Jet really needs to think through there tools.
I had a jet joiner and out of the box the tables where not level, coulnt keep them level no matter how much shimming I did so I went back to the dealer and saw this and fell in love. Huge Joiner and a space saving plainer. All was well till you go out of alighnment. There is no adjustment on the bottom plaier table. This means you need to et your blades upside down and guess if they are parelle to the table. This is impossable, even if you get that right you then need to re adjust your joiner table to match the new blade set. Also the knobs onthe back to move the fence are not high enought you wind up fighting wiht them, not a big deal since they can be retrofitted with higher levers. I love this idea and I think it is 90% there but untill they make a way to set the plainer table to the blades adjustment is near impossable and will take hours and hours not something I want. I would also like to see a sprial head in it or at least the option.

Buyer Beware
Saved up and bought the JJP-12 in November 2020, didn't get it for 6 months. Didn't register the warranty card. I bought it because of reviews and it's double duty. Long story short, I have no more than 4 hours of running time on it when the Made in China, 3 HP motor fried on me. After hours of trying to get help from JET, which is the worst customer service experience I've ever had, I ended up eating it! I had to pay a $700.00 to have the motor rewound, and have an electrician come to my house to verify the idle and running voltage . The customer support representative was highly trained in the art of Gorilla Dust. I will never buy another JET product! Take it or leave it.
