I was recommended this by a violin teacher, I didn't start with book 1 as they said I should be ok starting with this book. It starts with slurs, but it's not too hard. I am learning on my own, so the cd is really useful to play along to. Each song has it played first on the violin so that you can hear how it sounds and the next track is without the violin as a backing track so that you play along. This book walks you through different techniques that you need to know for grade 1. I would say that you probably still need a teacher to explain some of the techniques as although there are a few activities for you to do, there isn't much explanation before each piece.
