What is the actual width of the blade?

Blade Body width is 2.22" and tapers down to a sharpened width of 1.92" The plane is labeled as a 58mm. 58 mm = 2.28' plane is (wood body) is 2-3/4" x 10-1/2" x 1-1/4"

Are there detailed instructions to address set-up?

No instructions are included with the Daikichi Kanna, There you tube videos, try Samurai Carpenter, and some written instructions as well, try a Google search. First I sharpened the iron finishing with an 8,000 Grit water stone and polished the breaker and then made the the sole flat across it's high spots with 400 grit sandpaper on a glass surface with blade and breaker firmly in place but not through the body. Then carefully pare away high spots on the angled bed until the iron comes through with a tight fit. Be patient. I spent a few hours over several days before trying the first shavings and then made more adjustments. My first Japanese style 58mm plane is a fantastic plane for perfecting large surfaces.

does the main blade have a taper? Its not a stamped out piece of metal correct?

It has a slight taper but most Japanese planes have it. No its not stamped it is a forged piece of steel and iron

How thick is the cutting blade? Is it the same thickness at the both ends?

The blade is about 9/32" at the back end, and tapers to about 3/16" approaching the cutting end.
