Vincent is a cool, calculating contract killer at the top of his game. Max is a cabbie with big dreams and little to show for it. Now, Max has to transport Vincent on his next job - one night, five stops, five hits and a getaway. And after this fateful night, neither man will ever be the same again. Tonight everything is changing... Experience the intense action-thriller in a whole new way, with this 4K UHD remaster, overseen by director Michael Mann, featuring HDR (High Dynamic Range) for more detail, brightness, vivid color, and greater contrast. Review: BrownPolar Verdict - Occasionally, a film comes along with all the qualities of a masterpiece: a superb and original script that just could not go wrong in the hands of a gifted director, who has never made anything below par; a great cast who lovingly live the characters in their exceptional performances; outstanding cinematography; a terrific and haunting music score and crisp editing; and a film, not too short, not too long; and finally, critics adore it and audiences love it. That then is a masterpiece, and `Collateral' without any doubt is one, that I recommend to everyone as a 'film to see before you die' as the famous Film4 ad goes. One characteristics of Michael Mann's work is his unique portrayal of LA night: the roads, the traffic, the buildings and the night sky in particular; as he did in `Heat' and has revisited in `Collateral`. It is depicted almost as a character in his films, and here in Collateral, there are unique sequences in which aerial shots meanderingly focus on the moving taxi in which the two main characters move from one target to the next, with helicopters hovering in the background. And for a few seconds, the moving cab looks almost sailing through the night. I have never seen this technique before. One of the most memorable sequences in the film is the one where a fox crosses the street in front of the deeply thoughtful two protagonists. It is unlikely that I will ever forget that sequence. `Collateral' is likely to remain in our collective memory as a great film and a true masterpiece by one of the greatest directors of our time. Action Packed Absorbing Poor Ending
Good thriller, fantastic photography, excellent acting and direction. I thought the plot was almost plausible till the 4th killing, then it all became a bit insane and worthy of a DC superhero (Clark Kent as a Cabby). Apart from that it was good entertainment.

Average Guy comes through The Hero
I think Tom Cruise is great in this film. His friendly demeanor makes him even more menacing than he otherwise would be. Fox is great as the average guy trying to make good that when tested comes through the hero. I've no idea why my reviews for this film keep going missing. This is the third time I have put up my review.

Worst assassin ever
If any of you have ever played the Hitman video games you will probably think that you could do quite well as contract killer given the right tools. You'd probably be right, or at least you'd be a hundred times better than Vincent in this movie. Apparently the phrase "silent assassin" is not in his vocabulary. He doesn't even use silencers on his very loud gun. Tom Cruise plays Vincent - a thoroughly conspicuous looking character who is in LA for a spot of contract killing. He hires unhappy cabbie Max (Jamie Foxx) for the whole night. Five stops, five kills - all in a night's work. This arrangement might have worked if Vincent were competent in the least. But he's just terrible. He leaves evidence everywhere, makes moronic mistakes, walks in front of every CCTV camera in LA, leaves fingerprints everywhere, and blabs far too much to Max, who any half-competent assassin would off at the end of the night anyway. Whatever the bad guys are paying him, the paycheck far exceeds the skill. I know the face and name need to sell the movie, but surely you'd remember a suspicious guy who looked like Tom Cruise being at the scene of every murder in LA during the course of one night. Michael Mann directs the film with amazing skill, brilliantly capturing the multiple looks and feelings of night-time LA. There are many scenes of tangible atmosphere in Collateral, so much so that the film is eerily calming. Using a combination of digital cameras for the car scenes and 35mm (Super35 sadly, not anamorphic) for the interiors there are many gorgeous shots and stunning compositions. Cruise and Foxx have great chemistry together though it must be said that Foxx comes off as the better performer/character. Neither of them overact and keep their cool but there's a true realistic edge to his lonely cabbie than Cruise's idiot assassin who leaves incriminating exhibits A-Z all over LA. Look out for a blink-and-you-miss-it cameo from the Transporter himself right at the very start. The Blu-ray is in gorgeous looking 2.35:1 1080p with colors so vivid and lifelike you'll forget your watching a movie and not real life. The DTS HD-MA soundtrack is also stunning, fully complimenting the movie's dynamic sound design. Gunshots and very loud and pack a heavy punch, if you have a home theatre you'll love it. James Newton Howard's atmospheric score is also seamlessly woven into the film's sound design and it's surely Howard at the top of his game, miraculously blending his own score with non-original tracks. Seriously, if you have a home theatre you'll LOVE the Fever Club scene.

Typical Michael Mann, an excellent action movie
On the face of it, an assassin with a shopping list, forcing a taxi driver to drive him and get involved in his heartless actions is a strange story. Michael Mann manages to create a believable narrative with Tom Cruise and James Foxx make it work. The film has multiple events that are surprising/alarming on first viewing, especially if you empathise with the characters.

Mann at his best - a dirty, dangerous city at night. Foxx at his best, Cruise totally bearable!
I have driven through LA on dry hot nights and it's an experience that stays with you, all the more if you lived most your life in wet and wild northern England. This excellent film recreates that atmosphere of a soulless, dangerous dirty dusty city at night to perfection. It could be any city but it's also definitely LA. There's something about cities at night that excites and Mann has captured this feeling with great skill. I don't often enjoy film soundtracks, unless they are tinkling away somewhere far in the background, but here it's different. I often pop the dvd on after a couple of jack daniels solely to listen to the sound-track and relax. Watching that cab cruise through Santa Monica and around town while Hands of Time plays just takes me right out of my chair and back to the back seat of a cab on the west coast. Jamie Foxx is the standout actor here, and he's just amazing, while TC is bearable as the super focussed assassin, so I get to my 'special place' without being too distracted. The tension cranks up as cruise works through his list and the ending is just as atmospheric as the beginning, set on the city's tube system. Top 10 for me - just wonderful. Although hugely different in every way, I'd also recommend Miami Vice by Mann both TV and new film, if only for the way they celebrate city architechture, lighting (and thumpojgn 80s music).

My FAVORITE film of the 2000s!
COLLATERAL, for my money, is one of the best films of the decade. Most modern films have a "sameness" about them. Regardless of genre, they all seem "the same". There tends to be too much focus on "wow-ing the moviegoer" with growing technology (CGI, special effects), gimmickry (tricky plots, flashbacks, surprise endings), and not enough focus on character development and dialogue. Another thing that I think a lot of today's movies lack is "realistic character interaction". Somehow, COLLATERAL overcomes all the cliches found in many modern films and rises to the level of poetry. Directed by the great filmmaker Michael Mann (THIEF, MANHUNTER, HEAT, THE INSIDER, and a personal shout-out to his groundbreaking 80s TV series MIAMI VICE), COLLATERAL is an absorbing, atmospheric, provocative tale of two men who meet at the literal crossroads of their lives. A mystery man named Vincent (played with 100% utter conviction and ease by the legendary Tom Cruise) arrives at LAX and "accidentally" bumps into another man, in which a briefcase exchange ensues. Vincent travels to downtown LA and gets in a cab driven by Max (Jamie Foxx in a performance that would earn him a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination). Vincent tasks Max to drive him around LA to complete his "errands". Max soon finds out (the hard way!) that Vincent is a contract killer. Vincent is going to kill 5 people that night and Max must drive him around or else! During this night, Vincent and Max learn valuable lessons about each other and themselves. In a series of stimulating conversations, some very truthful facts of life are laid out for the viewer to absorb and consider. One can see Vincent and Max literally transfer personality traits to each other as the night ensues, which leads to an inevitable conclusion. Every time I watch the film, I pick up on a detail or nuance about Vincent and Max I hadn't seen or noticed before and am amazed at how believable their interaction is and how meticulous a film that Michael Mann has constructed. This film ought to easily be considered one of the best of the decade. Within this fascinating film, Mann mixes in a great soundtrack, superbly staged and convincing action sequences, and beautiful cinematography of LA after dark. The excellent supporting cast includes Mark Ruffalo (as Det. Fanning hot on Vincent and Max's tail), Barry Shabaka Henley (as nightclub owner Daniel, who the men have an interesting encounter with), Irma P. Hall (as Max's mom, who almost steals the movie!), Javier Bardem (in a pitch perfect scene as the big bad guy Felix), and last but not least an incredibly vibrant and sexy Jada Pinkett Smith (as an early fare of Max's who ends up being a key to the story). I cannot stress or say enough of how impressed I was with Tom Cruise's amazing work in this film. It is as much a physical performance as it is a verbal one. And he handles both sides with aplomb. How he did not get nominated for an Oscar (Best Actor) is beyond belief! I would have settled for him getting a "nomination", but, I swear, everytime I watch this flawless film, I continue to believe that this is THE performance that Mr. Cruise should always be remembered for, leaving all his other great work in the dust! This may be the best performance of his career, and it is thankfully part of a truly great film. I own this 2-disc set dvd and it is perfect, the way every dvd of a big film should be with great quality on the film dvd and interesting, refreshing commentary on the 2nd one. A masterpiece as far as I'm concerned!
