For background context: my old intel CPU started having overheating issues. While under load it quickly would jump up to +90C degrees, start to thermal throttle, and at worse cause my PC to hard crash without an error message or blue screen. I discovered online that apparently this generation of CPUs did not have the top plate soldered to the bottom portion of the CPU, and that overtime the internal thermal paste would dry up and become ineffective. My PC was old (4th gen i7 w/ DDR3 ram) and I was either going to have to do a whole rebuild for +$1000 or try to delid it and apply new internal thermal paste for $10. I am really glad I decided to give this a try. With the tool the top portion of the CPU easily popped off. I was able to *carefully* remove the old dried-up thermal paste, apply new thermal paste, and then put the CPU back in my PC. Now while under load I only get max temps of around 50C, down from 100C. Very happy with how it went. CPU working fine 6-months later.
