Farshore Waiting for Anya

I read this book with a 9 year old granddaughter. I was truly amazed by her ability to assimilate and understand the content held here. We underestimate children. She was both interested and questioning about the content. A true privilege to pass this story on to the younger generation and know that they understand the lesson. Highly recommended for all age groups but do suggest it is discussed.

During the war Jo tended his sheep, his father Lescon was a prisoner of war and had fought the Germans, Rauf smelt a bear and Jo ran to the village, the bear was killed, later Jo found a bear cub a man said the mother bear had led them away from her cub, the man Benjamin lived at widow Horcada's farm, heading to see the cub one day he heard a noise in the barn, it was a hidden Jewish child, Benjamin was a Jew, he had come from Paris and was waiting for his daughter Anya to arriveBenjamin would take any children that arrived into Spain, Jo was asked to keep this a secret, German soldiers arrived and anyone helping a Jew was to be shot, all weapons had to be handed in and there was to be a curfew, more and more Jewish children were arriving, it was getting very dangerous, how were they to get them to freedom and safetyJo becomes more and more involved along with his grandfather even though if caught his whole family would be shot

Yet again Michael Morpurgo has written a very readable book. It is written from the point of view of a teenage boy living in the south of France during German occupation in the second world war. For a teenager, it is worth reading and for adults it is an exciting book. I believe it has now been made into a film. Well worth reading.
