We got his his own set at 20/21 months of age, and for MONTHS now, he's playing with them almost daily. We've had this product for about 5 months now, and both my husband and I consider this set to be one of the best toys we've bought for him. We started him out with chains of orange and green pieces pre assembled (by us) so that he'd learn how to put the gears into the little pegs. Eventually we started making the process harder for him by making smaller preassembled pieces (e.g. shorter chains first then eventually just orange and green piece-pairs preassembled). After 5 months of use, now even if we leave them all completely disassembled, our son seems to be able to put the pieces together to create whatever it is he wants. Just the other day he proudly showed us a "double bus" (i.e., double decker bus) --- two rows 3 gears all connected together. He still isn't able to 100% push all of the pieces tightly together, but even then (surprisingly enough) the pieces don't just fall apart. Yes, they do stay together better when t hey are tightly pushed in, but this toy has been seemingly designed with children who naturally are weaker in strength and dexterity in mind. It's great. This is the first set I bought. **Q: What ages is it designed for?** A: I bought these for my 7 month old grand daughter. At that age they do not 'construct' anything. However, she was completely fascinated by the moving gears and soon wanted to turn the gears herself. This helped her hand eye co-ordination. However, I strongly recommend that you buy one of better quality. These do not stay together. The joining mechanism is flimsy. **Q: What is the size of the space between the teeth of the gears?** A: I don't remember. I bought this decades ago (my son's are now in their early 30's) but they both loved this toy as toddlers and played with it for years! Both on the autism spectrum it really held their interest and they never got their fingers caught. **Q: What is the diameter of each gear?
