George Kohlrieser―an international leadership professor, consultant, and veteran hostage negotiator―explains that it is only by openly facing conflict that we can truly progress through the most difficult business challenges. In this provocative book, he reveals how the proven techniques and psychological insights used in hostage negotiation can be applied successfully to any personal or business relationship. Step by step, he outlines the seven key factors that anyone can use to remove the blocks that stand in the way of resolving tough problems and shows how business leaders, in particular, can develop and access the skills they need to create trust and a positive mind-set in their companies. Review: Imprescindible en el ejercicio del liderazgo - Un libro de lectura muy amena y que te enfocará muy bien en el ejercicio de gestionar el conflicto diario Review: Best Book Ever on Negotiation With Adversaries - Absolutely an outstanding book that I have returned to time and again. Most interesting is the discussion on the "mind's eye" which is a critical part of understanding point of view in adversarial situations. I recommend this book to anyone in a counseling situation, whether in business or law enforcement.

Had to be 5 stars after reading this book!!
Read and re-read this book over the last couple of years. it provides great personal insight though shared experiences that George explains. The good thing about this book, is you can pick it up after a few months to remind you of situations. I found it very easy to relate my personal issues, and realise development areas through readingt the chaprters. I found myslef saying very often, WOW! thats me, or thats how i feel or i now know i can change this cycle of events!! Myself, my family, my freinds and my collegues all put the fish on the table quite frequently. There is very little bottling up of emotion anymore. Well Done, and thank you George.

A SOOTHING AND PEACEFUL PRESENCE IN A DELICATE NEGOTIATION
A SOOTHING AND PEACEFUL PRESENCE IN A DELICATE NEGOTIATION I had been very impressed by George Kohlrieser’s book “Hostage at the table” when I first read it in 2009, and I chose to read the book again today and note the impressions and thoughts that came to me : A BREATH OF FRESH AIR that cleanses the fog of pressure. A SHELTER, a refuge, a space to recharge batteries. A SAFE PLACE OF SUPPORT to go back to when feeling uncomfortable. THE RIGHT COMPANION book before, during, and after a separation. A GUIDELINE, with landmarks realigning the mind’s eye on the path of negotiation. A SPACE OF AWARENESS : do I feel tense ? do I feel inhibited ? Is my heart beating too fast ? What happens when I sit in front of a blank page, get up, do something else, when I go round in circles ? I realize that the focus of my mind’s eye is going astray. AN ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF BLOCKED GRIEF : being taken hostage by fear, frustration, worry disappointment, demotivation, resistance to change, etc.. And the benefit of unlocking blocked grief. THE IMPORTANCE OF GRIEF : expressing emotions, getting in touch with the pain, saying Goodbye before saying Hello again, processing through the stages of grief, in life and at work. THE POWER OF EMBRACING GRIEF, getting hostage free, to deliver change A PAIR OF GLASSES : where am I, where am I going, and how am I getting there? A TASTE OF FISH : is the fish on the table ? Are the unspoken things named ? Is there any bonding ? Are all the ingredients for dialogue and negotiation present ? A PLACE TO UNLOCK DISCOMFORT : getting away from fearing the other’s fear, which creates 2 hostages instead of 1 and regain self power. A TRIGGER OF RECONNECTION to self and others. The importance of keeping bonding with oneself and others, even if not reciprocated for a time, when facing unblocked griefs within other. THE POWERFUL FEELING OF FREEDOM after saying a proper “Goodbye”, after clarifiying unfinished situations. A SOOTHING AND PEACEFUL PRESENCE : When I feel my mind’s eye is going astray, I now glance at the book or even go physically to it, wondering “what am I a hostage of“? “Worry, fear, inhibition, internal conflict between what I want to do and what I should do, or something else”? The result is that my internal state changes immediately, refocusing my mind’s eye towards serenity. The book is a secure base in itself. A delicate negotiation is like a delivery. “Hostage at the table” acts like a special “delivery coach” tuning sound and vibration throughout labour and delivery, harmonizing the right limbic part of the brain (“want”, emotions, creativity) and the left cortex of the brain, (“should”, thinking, rational). A trigger of change, and a trigger of action. A DELIGHTFUL SOURCE OF INSPIRATION AND A GIFT. Thank you George ! My heart, my mind, my body, and my spirit are stimulated. My state of mind feels hostage-free with George Kohlrieser’s “Hostage at the table”, a wonderful and clarifying book, which i mention to many friends and clients. Reviewed by : Marianne C.
