The detection level is 1000 CFU/ml and does not meet drinking water standards. For testing your well water, we would suggest using our well water test kit (product number: WS-425W). The WS-425W detects coliform bacteria and meets drinking water standards.

Could you use this to test rivers/ponds/creeks?

As the other people mentioned, this product will detect any bacteria and is very sensitive. Natural ecosystems should have bacteria in them so this is probably not a good option for streams, ponds, etc. to determine if there are contaminating bacteria, or pathogenic bacteria in a natural ecosystem, you will need a bacterial detection system that discriminates bacteria by type.

My city dumped sewage into our lake. Would this also work to test lake water for bacteria?

Dear Eddie, I think the best bet would be to go to http://www.silverlakeresearch.com/ , the website for the company, or call them at 626.359.8441. They make many products for testing water, including your tap water. I've read the more extensive instructions inside the packet, and it just doesn't specify using it on anything other than pools and spas and I don't know enough about the difference between testing chlorinated water and fresh water. Good luck with your water. Terrible thing for a city to do.

Can this test be used to test the water in a salt water pool as well?
