Legit MATTE with HIGH hold. (Grey Tin- Ultra Matte)
This is for the ULTRA MATTE CLAY in the grey can. This stuff is amazing. There are numerous products available that promise a matte finish, but still leave your hair with a shine that is not natural. If you are looking for something truly matte, the grey tin is the way to go. A little goes a long way. Scent is subtle. Also, this is the only product I feel comfortable going to sleep with in my hair. It is very natural and does not come off on my pillows. (I normally shower at night anyway) It is almost like having nothing in your hair, yet it gives you tremendous control. The only con is that it is hard to get your hands on. As soon as I discovered this (I was using the matte paste in the yellow can before this one), it was sold out, and I had to get it from another site. Also, if you neglect to really emulsify it in your hands prior to application, it can leave a slight grey signature in your hair. So be sure to really rub this stuff into your palms and fingertips before running through your hair. It also gives a huge amount of volume to your hair. I have straight fine hair, and this makes me feel like I have a much fuller head of hair. 10 out of 5 stars. Just wish it were PRIME delivery. Get on that Dapper Dan! (I also wish I knew which product the reviews here were for: the grey tin or the red tin.)

Excellent Hair Clay!
Excellent product! I use this product to style my thick, straight hair and it works very well. The matte finish is very nice. It leaves my hair looking textured and not slicked down or greasy like other products I've tried. Product is thick, but easy to apply and a tin of this stuff lasts me for months. The scent is a very light and clean vanilla. A change from the previous formula that contained a sandlewood fragrance (which I loved), but the new version is also nice and subtle. Hold is excellent and doesn't leave your hair stiff, making restyling throughout the day a breeze. You can simply run your fingers through your hair and go. It honestly works better as the day goes on. I highly reccommend this product to anyone and it is a great value at the selling price.

Overall very good.
Has an odd scent. After it's in my hair I get a wiff if modeling clay (think play dough). The scent is light enough it won't keep me from using this product. It has great hold and can be refreshed by damping the area and rebrushing. However, the refresh doesn't look as good as when it's first applied. It does bring the silver in my hair out a little more than without product, which I like. When it dries after the initial application it has a crusty look and feel. A little rebrush with no water does the trick of giving my hair a natural look with plenty of hold. It washes out with shampoo and water very easily. I will rebuy this as needed for use when I want a natural no shine look.

Better than the competition!
After about twenty years of short hair I decided to go long again. So I looked around to find something to tame my otherwise unruly hair. Beauticians and barbers all recommended one of the American modern brands but it had too strong of both shine and smell. So I went with Dapper Dan, a well tried formulation from the UK. Since I'd not used pomade in decades I got both the matt (i.e. low shine) versions, clay in the red can and paste in the dark gold can. Between the two I like the paste better when my hair was too short to tie back but long enough to be unruly. Once it grew to a respectable length, either for a pony tail or a bun the clay's advantages were obvious so now that it is time to re-order I'm going entirely with the clay. The clay version is harder to get out of the can, so you end up wetting your fingers and making several small additions. The paste is easier to get out of the can and easier to get too much. Too much of the paste is kind of waxy and has to be combed out with more water to spread out. The clay also thickens the look of the hair and too much is, well, too much, too. Both will hold a long time, and will help the hair come back together during the day if it is combed with a little water. I've changed my rating on the clay from four stars to five stars since it turns out that it wears as well or better after multiple re-combings. When using the paste I do sometimes get a bit too much to easily spread out with combing.

Purchased as a joke, now I really am a Dapper Dan Man
Like most people, I purchased this just so I could make O Brother Where Art Thou jokes. I found that it actually is a really great hair product for the price though! The biggest competitors at this price point are Old Spice, Axe, etc. I've used most of those but am always looking for something new, and having never used a clay product, this caught my eye. As the name implies, it has a stronger hold than the pastes/creams that I'm used to using. However, it does not leave my hair feeling stiff. I've found that I can turn the front of my hair up and it will stay up all day with this product, but I can still run my hand through it without feeling sticky. Everyone styles their hair differently, but I personally style mine with my hands and a comb. For best results I put this in after towel-drying my hair out of the shower. About an hour or two after I've applied it I'll run my fingers through my hair to make it look more natural by removing comb lines. I've found that if I do that any sooner then my hair will still be a little damp, but that can be sped up if you use a blow drier.

This stuff is....wow. The good - it has a decent subtle aroma which isn't offensive and unbelievably strong hold which rivals industrial adhesive/gap fillers. Once you put this in your hair, your hair is going nowhere. Easy to wash out, no strange residue which makes you feel like you need to wash your hair a few dozen more times. The not so good - like industrial adhesive/gap fillers, it's super hard to work into a usable form. I'm applying in winter so the tin/contents are also quite cool, but application also resulted in a decent amount of hair torn from scalp...not to mention it's hard to get off your hands onto your hair, so you end up washing a decent amount straight down the drain. If your hair is absolutely soaking wet it's easier to apply, but even then still not actually easy. If you absolutely need to ensure your hair isn't moving and you don't mind quite the challenge getting it into your hair, you may have found what you're looking for. I'm still not convinced, but I'll update during the height of an Australian summer if serious heat makes it less epic to apply.
