When you get the tare weight do you have to manually deduct it from the total weight

No. I use the tare when I want to place a bowl or plate on the scale. I put the bowl or plate on the scale and then I press tare and it makes the weight start at zero so when I put the food on the plate or liquid in the bowl, the weight showing is only for the food or liquid. Tare zeros out everything. Then if I remove the plate or bowl it shows a negative value, and I just press tare to zero it out again.

I cant get it to change scale units. How do you do this? It flips among the non gram units but will only stay on grams. Flipping is too fast to read.

First power on the scale, then touch the button labeled "Scale Units", you should hear a beep. Once you do you will see the units on the LCD change, keep touching the "Scale Units" button until the screen shows the units you want to weigh.
