The darker, denser orange color is definitely rubber and the lighter yellow color end is a harder plastic and almost see through around the edges. You can tell the difference by rubbing each side in your hand and feeling the texture, weight, and density. I like the 12" fat handles much more on the Estwing than on the 14" Vaughn, but otherwise, the U.S. built Vaughn has my vote.
