You’re building a hot rod. The first step is the chassis. If it’s not right, the car won’t handle well. If it’s really not right, the car might destroy itself. There are choices to be made, from frame rails to suspension components, and some combinations will work better than others. Next is the body. This is what everyone sees first. It’s what makes a hot rod a hot rod. This book is a sure-fire guide to the best approach. Veteran builder and writer Dennis Parks walks you through the whole process, from finding and using existing panels to choosing New Old Stock panels from the aftermarket. The Hot Rod Body and Chassis Builder's Guide offers fool-proof advice for building the hot rod of your dreams. Review: Aimed more at the beginner, but I quite like it - This book is perfect if you're getting into building your own hot rod or car. I started my first build this past winter and quickly realized there were a HUGE amount of decisions to make and I know very little about most of them. For someone like me, this book is perfect and makes for a solid starting point. If you've built a few cars, this book likely won't be all that helpful. This book DOES have some 'how to / project' components, which are definitely helpful. But, like everything, there's probably 5-10 ways to do any one thing and this won't cover them all in depth (but that's why they make more topic-specific books). I actually liked this about it; the book sets up a nice foundation for you to research more later. And if you're chomping at the bit, you could get started with this book. To that end, it really covers a comprehensive list of topics and I have learned a huge amount from this book. And it also feels 'up to date' with more recent pictures. I don't know why this is such a big deal to me -- a technique is a technique -- but I find myself trusting this one more because of it. And here's the most valuable thing I can think to provide, its Table of Contents: 1: Tools (Pneumatic, Bench, Hand, Portable) 2: Chassis Work (Repairing Existing Chassis, Installing Aftermarket Trans Cross Member, Building New Chassis, Safety Wiring Rotors) 3: Hot Rod Body Repair (Rust/Paint Removal, Patch/Replace Panels, Replacing Door Bottoms, Installing Patch Panel, Filling Holes / Dings, Filling Bigger Holes) 4: Reproduction Bodies (Storage, Mounting Body on Chassis, Installing Fenders, Baking Fiberglass, Bracing, Protecting Steel Bodies) 5: Working With Metal (Making Patterns, Cutting, Straightening, Bending, Building Fuel Tank, Making 3-Piece Hood, Punching Louvers, Bead Rolling / Making Flanges, Hammer Forging, Building Flat Dash w/ Round Edge, Fastening, Smoothing Bumper) 6: Painting: Preparation (Surface Prep, Undercoats, Block Sanding / Applying Sealer) 7: Painting: Color and Top Coats (Base Coat to Pinstripe) Review: ctkid343w - Great book. One of my top three books for hot rod chassis building. Excellent first book to purchase. Buy this & Boyd Coddington's Hot Rod Engines, Drivelines & Chassis and also Street Rodders Chassis & Suspensioun Handbook. These three are all you will need. They don't try to cover everything (chassis, drivelines, engines, body, interior, mock up, assembly) and the result is far more detail on chassis & body.

A good book, but the author often glosses over topics that need more explanation...
This book has a lot of good content, so it's unlikely that you will regret purchasing it. However, the author is clearly targeting readers that already have a certain degree of automotive knowledge, and if you aren't already somewhat familiar with automotive terminology you are likely to be confused and possibly need to go to the web to get clarification about what the author is describing. Also there are a fairly large number of images and text describing the images, but frequently it is pretty hard to understand what part of the image is being described. It would have been far better if the author had added sets of arrows to where different parts are within the photos. The book is also a bit short, which isn't a huge problem in itself, but frequently a different style of chassis is mentioned, but rather than give a full description, it's just glossed over. So the book is short, yet doesn't fully cover the topic.

A lot of useful info in a small book.
Hot Rod Body and Chassis Builder's Guide (Motorbooks Workshop) I have built cars before but this will be my first street rod. This book went a long way acclimating me to the differences you can expect. It is one of the best if not number one on my list for recommendations. Good for the beginner or seasoned pro. It doesn't cover in depth everything you may run into building a rod but more than enough to get you going in the right direction and know what questions to ask along the way.

Awesome Guide
I am using this book to teach me terms and skills that I otherwise wouldn't know. I do have experience working on cars. This is my first year working on a hot rods at a shop. I am part of a group of guys working to build hot rods for a future club(hopefully soon). Now that I am building my own I needed to be well versed before I start to build. This is great for someone with some knowledge about cars.

OK book- not great.
Not much help to me, thought the frame section might include more info on traditional builds but frame had IFS. In the tools section, the text on air compressor regulator says plumbed with hard copper when line is threaded black iron pipe. Who proof-reads this stuff?

Sehr empfehlenswert.
