After watching quite a few, I decided on the Fox 40 Sharx because of one wilderness guide who tried to test various whistles, grumbled about the lousy audio fidelity of his videos, and said that among all whistles, he keeps returning to the Sharx for everyday carry. So when my blue-and orange model arrived, I went behind our condo unit to test it while my wife remained in the screened porch one floor above me. When I blew the whistle out over the woods behind us, I could definitely hear it through the padded stereo earphones that I wore for protection. And when I went back upstairs, she grimaced slightly and said, "Yep... It's loud!" She wanted LOUD for emergency use and also liked the size and design of the thing. So she's now looking forward to getting her own purple-and-green version! Just be aware that pealess whistles emit a shriek whose loudness depends solely on how much air you blow through them. So in an emergency, blow HAAAAARRRRRD... you can't be timid with pealess whistles.
