Review: Rockin' Like it's 1981 ! - When the first Star Trek movie was released, someone said it was like seeing your old friends from years ago and knowing they're all doing well. The Stray Cat's "Rumble in Brixton" DVD not only shows us that Brian, Lee and Slim Jim are doing well, but they're still rockin' like it's 1981. It's all good...the vocals, cinematography, Dolby 5.1 Surround, Lee's slappin' bass, Slim Jim's driving kit and of course Brian's howlin' Gretsch. This is one of those DVD's where louder is better. I swear, if I closed my eyes, I'd feel like it's 1987 again and I'm back at one of their shows at One Step Beyond in Santa Clara, CA, USA. Do I smell someone smoking clove? When the Stray Cats went separate directions years ago, a huge void was created in the rockabilly world, leaving many folks to get their fix through Reverend Horton Heat, DuValls, Hillbilly Hellcats, Speed Devils and similar acts. They're all superb in their own sound, but it's like wanting to go back to your first girlfriend after you've been dating someone new. I like BSO (the Brian Setzer Orchestra), but that was like dating the big sister of your first girlfriend...close, but not exactly what you were looking for. To me, the BSO rockabilly breakout sets with Brian, Mark and Bernie were the highlights of those shows. The 68CBS tour and CD then wet our appetites even more for a Stray Cats reunion. And it all brings us to what we've been waiting for, for a long time. Finally, the Stray Cats on DVD to cure that rockabilly fix. So what's on the 129 minute DVD? 21 tunes, plus a bonus track - Mystery Train Kept A Rollin', complete with behind the scenes footage. Additional bonus material includes a nice montage of the band performing Stray Cat Strut throughout the years, along with vintage photos. A final bonus track shows an extensive behind the scenes look at the Stray Cats on their recent 2004 European tour, including the London show from which the DVD was recorded, complete with post-concert crowd reaction. There's quite a bit of dialogue from the band, roadies and fans, which adds a nice personal touch. However, be warned: There is a scene where Brian's black Gretsch is "modified" with a BSA emblem, involving the use of a power drill! Not for the faint of heart. A 24 page booklet is also included, which chronographs the bands history. At the time of this writing, Brian has announced that he may need to slip into early retirement, for reasons mentioned on his website. So if you're a Stray Cats fan, this DVD may be your only fix for a long time. And if you never got to see them live, or are too young to have lived in the day of Gene Vincent or Eddie Cochran, you also may want to park this DVD next to your copy of La Bamba. It's rockabilly at its best! Review: Those Cool Cats still rock the house!! - I got my DVD on New Year's Day and have watched it 7 times already in just the first 4 days. Man, this is a wonderful concert and a real treat for any age. I have shown this to my parents (age- mid 60's) and my nephews (ages 10 and 13) and they all love it as much as I do. Rumble in Brixton is set in a small to medium sized venue with a sold out audience of about four to five thousand very enthusiastic fans. Hearing the crowd and watching them groove to each slap of the bass really made me feel like I was there. Brian Setzer is a guitar player like no other, truly amazing. The way Lee Rocker man-handles that doghouse bass all over the stage you'd think it only weighs 5 lbs. And Slim Jim Phanthom's excitment and enthusiasuim at the drums is infectious. I'm 36 and remember when the Cats came out but like most others at the time I didn't relate to their sound. I mean I loved their hits (Stray Cat Strut, (She's) Sexy and 17, and Rock This Town) but knew very little of the main body of their work, or of the Rockibilly genre. But now, after watching this concert, I can't get enough. I'm kicking myself for missing out on 25 years of this!! In short, If you like concerts on DVD, buy it you'll love it.

Vintage Rock and Roll
This is an absolute killer display of grass-roots rock and roll. The cats are better than ever. By the time you make it through the concert you will be spent. This is pure energy all the way through. This may be the best display of all to showcase Mr. Setzer's unmatched guitar virtuosity. Brian can play any style you want and play it better than anyone else. Lee rocker and Slim Jim are very entertaining. This is all about the music, and you can tell they love to play it. I can't really describe how good this is. If you like rockabilly, blues, boogie woogie or just plain old rock and roll you will not be dissapointed. If you want to watch a master guitarist at his best, get this dvd.

Wake up call to guitar gods
Yes this dvd is everybit as good as the reviews say and i have lost count of how many times i have watched it.Where can you find a show that fits in a van and gives you that big a sound with 3 boys that play with more passion than that? After seeing this dvd it has reminded me how bad popular music has gotten. If you have young aspiring musicians in your family than you must buy this for them to see. This is a rock show!Featuring.....wait for it....PURE TALENT,no fancy lighting,no big video images on a screen,no pyro show, just hard work, dedication, passion and TALENT!Brian started learning guitar at the age of 8 and he was showed the world does not revolve around the power chord. This dvd is so good that at the age of 40 it has made me pick up the guitar and put some hard work and passion into mylife. If that rubs off on your children after giving them this than it could be the best money spent.I smile everytime i look in my rearview mirror and see my 7 year old singing "Mystery train kept a rollin".Maybe there is a future for music eh?? Enjoy!

Awesome DVD for you old die hard Rockabilly's
The audio is incredible. Brian Setzer is ripping as always, and with age he gets more and more polished. Slim and Lee are rocking as always and again, polished as ever. You can definitely see the long lasting chemistry these three have shared throughout the past decades when they are on stage together. I highly recommend this DVD! They play all of the old classics and cover many tunes from their Sexy 17 album.

Just bought this one on import from the states, which is Region 1. Strange as this was filmed in London. Wake up!!!, there are a lot of people missing out on this. Missing out?,.. Why?,...Well, this has to be one of the best ever dvd's iv'e ever seen. Some of the rawest, pacey rockabilly/rock'n'roll you'll ever want to hear. Filmed in front of a sell out audience at the Brixton Academy. Buy it if you can get a multi region player, still buy it as you simply won't believe what you hear. In my opinion, one of the most talented band's of the late 70's & 80's, if not the most talented, which at the time must have been a shock as they could actually play their own instruments & play them well!. Go get it!!!!

I recorded an edited version of this concert from TV over a year ago. Well, our satellite DVR finally died, and we HAD to see this show again (and again, and again). Of all the live performances we've seen over the years, the Stray Cats in Brixton is definitely the one worth repeated viewing. This DVD is a must see, not just for rockabilly fans but for music lovers in general. It is amazing how these three musicians pull it off, not just for their technical expertise with their (minimal) instruments but in the way they can electrify an audience. The Stray Cats are awesome. If they ever have another reunion tour my spouse and I will be first in line to buy tickets. ps - I am Nicoley's dad, I think?
