The batteries are built in the of the item, so unfortunately it not possible to change the batteries

Is there a switch to turn on the lights? I can't see through the packaging. I'm giving this as a gift, so don't want to open them.

Its in the middle of the ninja start where the batteries are, you cant see the button but you squeeze the middle, it should turn on
