Review: Besonders wenn man selbst eine Katze hat, sind die Situationen, die hier beschrieben werden, sehr unterhaltsam und nachvollziebar - auch beim wiederholten Lesen immer wieder gut!!! Review: What Strunk & White's Elements of Style did for expository writing, this book has done for persuasion. Heinrichs writes about rhetoric in the old sense: convincing others to act. This book will bring pleasure to both beginners and experts. It is superficially simple, but actually quite profound. And it is funny. Heinrichs' command of the topic allows him to make complex ideas easy to understand. His direct writing provides an example of everything he is teaching. And he brings up and illustrates the fundamentals of persuasion. If you think you know rhetoric, but do not immediately recognize concepts like trophe, synecdoche, or the fallacy of antecedent, use your paws and get this book. As the ancient Greeks and Romans knew, and Heinrichs teaches, at the end of the day, good arguers must appear to be good people, to have "ethos." And the best way to project being a good person is -- to be a good person. So Heinrichs also teaches us to have good posture and be a good listener: "besides improving your image, posture can make you seem like a good listener. You're more likely to persuade if people think you are a good listener." Herein is good stuff for people who live in democracies and govern themselves by persuading their neighbors. This book will make you a better arguer. It might even make us a better nation.

A simple beginners guide to rhetoric and persuasion, aided by 'catty' anecdotes and some entertaining illustrations. This is a subject I knew very little about before reading this book: I now feel I have a handle on basic persuasion techniques, and have started to use them on my own family with very satisfactory results! I found it an enjoyable read, and the light tone kept me engaged throughout. It doesn't go into depth about the various negotiation methods, but gives enough to keep you reading without having to think too hard. This has tempted me to look into buying the author's earlier, more academic tome about arguing. Very happy with my purchase!
