Rani is my first choice for Indian and South Asian spices, condiments, sauces, and pastes. Reliable in their quality. This paste makes preparation of some dishes a little faster by eliminating the need to peel and mince the two. While not as fresh tasting, there is little difference in the completed dish. What is missing is the cook's enjoyment of freshly prepared garlic and ginger and the inspiration from their fresh aroma while in the early prep stage. So, a compromise. I try to always have this paste on hand for convenience.

I love the ginger and garlic blend it adds such a refreshing hit to all recipes.

I've seen some bad reviews of Rani cooking pastes here on Amazon, but I have also noticed most of them are for the Ginger paste and a few for the Garlic paste. I bought the ginger garlic paste, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. I've used a few brands over the years and Rani's stacks up pretty identically to others. But I was able to get this big jar of Rani for just about 3 dollars more than a much smaller jar (of Rani or any other brand for that matter), and I do use it a lot making things like chicken tikka or various curries, so it was a good deal. Of course, you can make your own garlic ginger paste, using 3-4 cloves of garlic (depending on size) and about an inch of ginger, and it will be better than a jarred paste. And if you have the time and the patience, I highly recommend that. But restaurants are using a paste, and for garlic ginger, I do, too. I mentioned the bad reviews -- I do NOT use just ginger or just garlic paste. I do find that processed garlic and ginger by themselves taste odd. I can't even use the little jars of pre-minced garlic you find in any grocery store. They are packed in oil, and one sniff tells you they are different than fresh minced garlic. Ginger paste, too, is subject to being... well, just wrong. But put the two together, and I'm fine with the results in a finished dish. With hours chopping and sauteing onions and tomatoes and roasting and hand grinding my own spices, I do allow myself this one shortcut, and the Rani brand is as good as any other for a good price. Hope that helps.

The first jar was great. The second one was not the same. The paste was a different color, and it smells like dirt. It's like someone mixed in potting soil into the jar. It's gross and completely inedible. They don't accept returns on this product, so apparently I'm out the $15. I will never buy a Rani product again if this is how they do business.

The Rani ginger/garlic paste is well worth the money! Just used it for the 1st time in a curry. A winner. The box arrived by a pleasant delivery man on a very strong windy night. The box was open at the top seam, however, the glass jar of sauce was very well wrapped and the remaining items in good condition.
