Fat Max 10-778 Stanley Fat Max Retractable Utility Knife

This is my second purchase of a Stanley Fat Max so that I can have one in my craft room and one the garage. Great tool. It is easy to use the push/pull of thumb to extend and retract blade. Durable, I have had my first Fat Max for a number of years so that makes it a great value. As noted, it is easy to change blades to keep it sharp. Sharp tools are safer.

I'd had a Fat Max for about 10 years and just couldn't get the last blade to stay in place. My 'handy' husband couldn't either and he told me to 'just buy a new one!' So I did. To my horror, I couldn't get the blade to stay in place in the new one. I looked at the instructions, watched YouTube videos and I still couldn't get the red button near the blade to do what it was supposed to do, lock in the blade. HELPFUL HINT to any one who is not tool handy - press the END of that long, red button nearest the blade and you will find with a slight bit of wiggling the new blade will settle in place with no problem. Do NOT press the centre of the long red button, for some reason it doesn't do what it is supposed to. I tried this trick on my old Fat Max and it works like a charm! Now, at least, I have a back up knife if one is lost in the mess on my art table! This is a sturdy, well made knife, I find it fits my hand well and I can use it on both very thick and thin materials in my art room

My favorite utility knife. I like the shape and the rubber grip. Fairly easy to change blades.

Only a 4 because it is a bit tough for small hands (I wear gloves for an 8 yr old) to set up. Operates smoothly and blade is secure.

I had another Stanley utility knife that worked well. It also had black rubber as part of the handle grip. To change blades, one simply opened it up with a screwdriver. This time, I wanted to get an extra utility knife and was about to buy another like my first one when I saw the FatMax. I decided to give it a go, and I am glad that I did. Installing the blade was a little tricky initially, but I was able to figure it out. Plus, no tools are needed for the installation. The rear of the knife has a storage chamber for extra blades. It came with five in all. I did not realize this and purchased extra blades, which I didn't need. Well, now I have a lot of extras which means I won't have to get any more for a long time! All in all, I like this utility knife and find myself wanting to use it all the time!

I am a stocker at Walmart and a good box cutter is a must have tool. I bought this Stanley utility knife specifically because Stanley used to stand for top quality tools. Apparently not any more. It feels good in the hand, with a good shape and good heft. But by the 2nd week of use, the blade would pull out of the handle while cutting. Sometimes the blade would be lodged in the cardboard; sometimes the blade would go sailing away and had to be searched for, for safety reasons. I started treating the knife with extreme caution while cutting but maybe once a week the blade would come loose no matter how carefully - and slowly - I cut. Last night, the top button that slides the blade in and out popped off rendering the knife useless. I tried to push the button back into place but the internal structure yields and will not receive the tab on the button. Useless. A Stanley tool. I see that the tool was made in China. I am so fed up with formerly US brands that now are manufactured in China and are pieces of crap. I am now using an all steel box cutter that you have to use a screwdriver to change blades. But it works. It is perhaps 40 years old. It is a Stanley. When Stanley tools were made in the USA.

Came in very minimalist packaging which was unexpected but different and refreshing to see, actually. The last time I bought a utility knife was a cheap Walmart one and...let's just say it quite literally didn't retract it's blade unless you opened the WHOLE thing to slide them back on the inside. The Wal-Mart one was also 2 pieces of barely finished metal. However, this FatMax ended up being about as well-built as I expected from Stanley. The walmart one was one color, no grips, and too easy to disassemble. The FatMax blade change system, so far, seems to be nearly foolproof with how straightforward it is if I decide to keep it for the long-term. The blades that shipped with it (and it came with more blades than the Wal-Mart one) all fit fine and are sharp. And the smallest detail I noticed is that there appears to be tiny amounts of lubricant between each blade stored in the handle. Highly appreciated. I definitely think this is worth the $10 and Stanley is a pretty well-known and reputable tools brand as far as I'm aware.

So much better than an old school, straight body box cutter like I have used for years. The slight angle makes a more than slight difference in cutting 'torque'. If saves you wrist from a lot of pain if cutting repeatedly. The new quick change blade feature is also a game changer. If the tip gets dull, I no longer make it last as long as possible. I just flip the blade around or put in a new one. My wife sells online and creates her own boxes. She liked this so much that it simply became hers...... I purchased a second one and keep it locked in my roll around. Highly Recommend!

I like the size and the weight. It feels sturdy. This is my second one, my old one was second hand to me. Cuts all my Amazon boxes with ease.

Maybe I just got a bad one. Usually this is my go to brand. After one month of light use (cutting down Amazon boxes) it fell apart.
