It shoots in the range of 90 fps, so the prime strength required (to compress the much stronger internal spring) is much higher than for a Nerf elite (dart firing) gun. I would not let a 5-year old use this. **Q: Hey i bought the nerf rival knockout and it's not shooting at all i did the prime and the barrel still no luck?** A: I bought 4 and one was broken the spring was broken **Q: can this shoot darts?** A: It shoots Nerf foam balls, Nerf darts are smaller and will barely be thrown out of this Gun.
