It looks like this would prevent the battery compartment on my Olympus Tough tg-6 from being opened. How easy is it to remove on the fly?

You do need the allen key to remove it. I have a Canon 5D and there is no interference with my battery compartment I do not know about yours.

Will this work to mount the Sony Alpha 6500 on to the Skout sling?

Yes. This will mount any camera with the standard 1/4" threaded hole in the bottom, which the Alpha 6500 does have.

what is the diameter of this hub?

The circular piece that attaches to the camera and slides into the holster is 1.25”. I have found that the plate that this mounts to is the piece in question. On my Nikons it does not block the battery compartment.
