They have a lock switch which can be released with slight pressure on the handles. Then the lock switch gives you a choice 2 options for 'range' - i.e how much the handles are allowed to part and how much blade can be used. The small range is great for comfort if you don't need to use the whole of the blades - making little snips at a time. The big range is full on, using the whole of the blades for long cuts, opening up the handles to the full range. The cutting ability is listed on the instructions and also here in the "product description", so I won't list them here - but it's pretty impressive. There's also a wire cutter built in for non-hardened wires of aluminium or copper - nice touch.
