Marshall Tucker Band 09/19/95. South Carolina Hall Of Fame Induction, Spartanburg, SC

*by F***E on Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2016*

Hello guys and gals, fans of the MTB. This is a show from 9/19/95. I didn't even realize that I owned most of it already. I collect live recordings. I had this ehow YEARS before it was released. I just bought this the other night. I look forward to hearing this recording because this is the COMPLETE LIVE RECORDING from the SOUTH CAROLINA HALL OF FAME where the band was INDUCTED. Georgia has one of those Hall of Fame places too and they inducted REM and Gregg Allman, just to name two bands from Georgia.. So this is just to let you know that organizations do exist to support and to exalt music that brought positive attention and musical PRIDE AND ADMIRATION to a state. I think the MTB belongs in the Cleveland, Ohio's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame too. They really were a fantastic band in their prime So I hope they are in that Hall of Fame in Cleveland already. I don't know if they are there yet. Anyway, the good news is this is the COMPLETE show, about TWICE as much as what I had on a cdr. So, you need to put down some CASH and SUPPORT the band by buying the complete RECORDING. This live show was recorded by professionals on good equipment. So love the HECK out of this GREAT SOUTHERN BAND. Thank you Doug Gray for keeping the band on the road sharing the LEGENDARY music. No, you want find Tommy or Toy Caldwell on this recording but I assure you that Doug Gray went on and RECRUITED some very FINE talent that continues to ROCK and Country to this day. I was SO impressed with a live dvd from just a few years ago, around 2012 or so. Doug can't sing anymore really, so the band sings for him and WHAT a GREAT band DOUG has at 68 or so at the time. Doug Gray had throat SURGERY in 2007 to help to REPAIR his ailing VOCAL CORDS. He even recorded a SOLO album in 2011 and he sounded up to it from what I heard, but Doug's singing days are past him now but he COULD still sing for SURE in 1995. So CELEBRATE with ME and OTHERS and LOVE this great Southern Band, The Marshall Tucker Band!!!!!

It is a quality recording but not the best performances of some of these songs.

I agree with many of the other reviews. It is a quality recording but not the best performances of some of these songs. Beyond that, the best thing about it is hearing Hughie's guitar on many of the tracks - the highlight being his typically soul-rending solo in "In My Own Way" (at the 5:00 min mark), when Doug introduces him. Incidentally, according to the liner notes, Hughie is only credited on 5 tracks. I can obviously hear his unmistakeable tone on more than that.It is really quite a polarized record....meaning: Some of the tracks are REALLY good (like "Desert Skies"), while others are strangely sloppy. I'm not about to review every selection but I'll say this much: "Fire On The Mountain" sounds like a bit of a mess, for whatever reason. It shouldn't be a hard song to perform but the music and the vox were lacking on this one.However... "Can't You See" is a veritable travesty. Doug should have never attempted to sing lead on this. It just doesn't fit his voice...which may be why he didn't sing lead on it originally. Plus, he didn't know the lyrics....nor did the other guy who sang the second 'verse.' Seriously, the arrangement, lyrics, EVERYTHING was all wrong on this one. And I'm not bashing them for screwing up one song; I'm just stating the facts. There are much better live versions with Toy & Tommy, so all is not lost.Overall, it is worth owning for me, personally, because I did see them at Myrtle Beach during this tour; So, there's the nostalgia factor. And at least Doug could still sing in 1995 (and he proves it on "Askin' Too Much Of You"). The musicianship is top-notch, throughout - as you might imagine. The instrumental sections are the standout, here.

    Hall of Fame for sure

As a fan I just had to get this live recording and what a treat it is. Along with Paul Riddle, Jerry Eubanks, Charlie Daniels you get the great guitar work of Hughie Thomasson and Chris Hicks in a show to induct the band into the South Carolina Hall of Fame where Marshall Tucker belongs. The recording is very good and the performance is high energy. It's not the same as having Toy and Tommy in the mix, and that will never happen again, but it is a really good live record to add to the many Tucker live recordings I already have. Thank you Charlie for playing with the band that night and having the late Hughie Thomasson playing with them is just so special. The landscape of my favorite southern rock bands has really changed, though not completely over with and it's nice to have something like this waiting at my door when I got home. Long live this pioneers of Souther Rock. R.I.P. Tommy and Toy, George McCorkle and Hughie Thomasson you have left us with such wonderful music and concerts that have touched our lives forever!!!!
