An excellent manual for England.
Should have published one for Canada where magnetic variation is everything. Grid references on 1:50000 and 1:25000 scales are everything. Section on resection might have been more useful and easily explained as triangulation. It took a while to realize that England has very little variation. This makes it easier to use a standard baseplate compass without the variation setting devices on more expensive models. The addition and subtraction knowledge for a basic model are essential in training at this level anyway. The format and graphics are the best I have seen. Coloured maps and photos and black and white diagrams used appropriately for best effect.

Fanatastic book
Great instructional book. Small size so easy to carry and includes a plastic guage to aid map reading. I love walking and maps and wanted to refresh my map reading ability and this book is perfect for all levels. Overall great value and i would recommend it as a learning/refresher guide.

Practice exercises - scale inconsistent
Having done a map reading and navigation course out on the fells the leader recommended this book for further reading. The content is really useful and emphasises the skills I learned on the course, but some o the practice exercises in the book (i.e. the grid reference ones) don't match the scales on any compass or the Romer scale, rendering them useless! I spent ages trying to work out why my grid references didn't match the answers, and then realised all the scales were wrong. It must be an error in the printing of the book that no one thought to check the scales would print accurately! Other than that, a useful little book for learning the basics.
