I was using the same 24/6 staples as at home but sometimes with big trains the stack of paper was just a little thick for the legs to fold over well. The 24/8 are great for thicker stacks. Both 24/6 and 24/8 staples are about 12mm wide so the ends of the legs on the 6s touch in the middle if you do an 'air' staple. The legs on the 8s overlap each other by 4mm if you do an 'air' staple. The 24 must be a wire gauge measurement of some type and is a nice medium/heavy weight.
