Does this jar opener work well for someone who has arthritis in her thumbs?

I'm with everybody else here on this. I have arthritis, especially bad in the thumbs, and if that weren't enough I have trigger thumb. I don't understand some of the 'this doesn't work' reviews. I'm weaker than probably 95% of people AND with arthritis, and this has been the best thing ever! Happened to break my arm the month after I bought this and it has become invaluable! I can not recommend this item enough. It is so easy that it was actually shocking when I first got it home. Everything from a bottle of water to a 4" diameter lid. Super easy even though many things for me are prohibitive with no strength and arthritis, and now the damaged arm/hand.

One answer said the wide end was 4.5" wide. But can a 3.75" dill pickle jar lid fit far enough in to the opener to grip it and facilitate opening it?

No. This opener only works well on lids under 3".

Does it open something as small as a half-litre pop bottle?

Yes works for all sizes of jars and bottles.

Is this supposed to have teeth on both sides or just one?

I have an old - 10 or so years? - OXO, and it has teeth only on one side. Only the teeth are metal - there is a non-serrated slim insert on the other side. Works very well......

Doesn't work

I bought 2 of these as gifts. Both recipients have reported back, with their gratitude fully intact, that the jar opener didn't do what it was supposed to. In fact, the metallic teeth, which are meant to grab onto the jar lids, ended up damaging the lids by scraping off the metal and/or paint. Sadly, the gifts have embarrassed me in public.
