Yes, you can use it as a Gateway for your Verizon FIOS. It is a dual-band with Mu-Mimo. Are there better ones? Yes, quite a few. It all depends on what your needs are. This one supports 802.11ac standard and has been around for a few years. The current standard is 802.11ax which supports even faster speeds and a wider array of devices simultaneously... if your WiFi devices are new enough to support 802.11ax, not a lot are at this point.

Can you turn off Wi-Fi with a button on this product?

Yes the R8000P has an illuminated button on the upper surface that allows the wireless to be turned off.
