Good book

Great book! The quality was very nice for a paperback: glossy, thick cover. The artists inside are a good collection for anyone to get a glimpse into late 20th, early 21st century artists. I used this as a supplement to the text book teaching my high school Art History class and it worked great for that. Each page has a few examples of the artists' work plus some interesting facts about where they are from, where they went to school, their influences and inspiration. There were a lot of contemporary books out there and I had a hard time choosing one, but I made the right choice with this one.

日本（特に地方）に居るとなかなか現代美術の作品を実際に見る機会が少なく、結局アートの本で見ることになります。自分では結構多くの美術家と作品について知っているつもりでも、本書に出てくる50人の中で知らなかったアーチスト（以下、「作家」）が何人かいます。そういう意味でこの本を買ってよかったかなと思います。 この本はドイツ語からの翻訳のようですが、序文もなければ著者紹介もなくていきなり作家の紹介記事にはいっていきます。そういう訳で、著者達がどのような基準で50人を選んだのかも判りませんが、難しいことを言わなければまずは順当と考えてもよいかと思います。ただ、個人的には私の好きなCornelia Parkerなども入れてもらったら良かったのになどという気もします。出てくる順番もアルファベット順ではないので、どういうことになっているのかと思いますが、気にせずに最初から読んで行けばよいのでしょう。 頁を開くと、まず最上部に当該作家と関連（著者達の考える）作家の年代チャートが現代史のエポックと共に示されているのはユニークです。次に、作家についての簡単なまとめや引用が記され、その後に作家、作品、作品制作についての記事が続きます。また、作品の図版が1〜3枚載っていますが大きな図版なのがありがたいところです。作家の顔写真がついているのもうれしく（Nan Goldinの殴られた顔が載っているのは痛ましい）、その下に簡単な経歴が記されています。英語も読みやすいので特に問題はないと思います。美大の学生さんには勧めです。結局、「このくらいの作家と作品については知っときなさいよ本」ですので、そのつもりで気軽に読めばよろしいのではないでしょうか。なお、日本人作家で載っているのはTakashi MurakamiとMariko Moriだけです。
