Tape been improved? Bad reviews on it.

First, I want to make it clear that covering windows with a shrink window kit is usually well worth the time , money, and effort. It cuts heating costs and makes the house more comfortable. I have been doing this for more than 10 years. I apply new shrink plastic each year and have never had a problem till last year. In previous years with other brands (or maybe even this brand) removal of the tape wasn't a big deal. It usually held pretty good through the winter but when spring came it was easily removed. I don't know if the tape that comes with this kit has been improved. I saw other reviews that said what they bought wasn't sticky enough. The packages I bought (which were not bought on Amazon) had tape that was over the top sticky. I do not plan to buy this brand again. When I phoned the company to ask how to remove it I think they recommended heat and WD-40 which sounded extreme to me. It was way more sticky than other brands I had ever used. I questioned it when I applied it to my windows but decided that maybe it would last through the winter better. It has been a mess and time consuming to trying to get it off. In the past, I think that I have bought 3M double sided tape (which is often found in the winter insulation area of big box stores) when I have run short on what was included in a box of shrink window kit and had good luck. Looking at the choices on Amazon there are so many, I wouldn't know where to start with a suggestion. If you decide to buy it, I would suggest at least checking the tape before you get much applied by putting it on the intended surface, putting some of the shrink plastic on it, leave it for a day (and you might not even have to wait that long), and then try pulling it off. It is kind of a fine line between not being sticky enough and too sticky. If you are having difficulty removing it, I would look for a different double sided tape to use.

Does it have to be reapplied every year? Why?

If you want to open your windows in the warmer months, you'll need to take it off. Otherwise, sunlight and normal stress can also make the tape fail eventually. For a good seal, it's probably best to re-apply them every year.

How does one remove the glue left on the window frame after removing window film tape that was in use for 5 years?

Get some industrial adhesive remover

Does anyone know the thickness of film?

I don't have a measuring device for this, but it looks very much the same thickness as the 3M window film: 0.75 mils, 19.05 microns. It is transparent and colorless. I reviewed this product and gave it a poor rating because the film has poor shrinkage (so it looks crummy when you use it) and the Frost tape is pretty much useless. Covering a window with a film is a great idea, cuts infiltration and increases insulation capacity of the window; but why not use a product that works, i.e., the 3M film. The Frost stuff is just really poor quality.

Good, strong film that makes quite a bit of difference and is (relatively) easy to apply. The only drawback is that the way the sheets are cut can result in a lot of waste, depending on the size of your windows. I probably wasted a third to a half of each sheet. Also, the creases in the folds remained, which means that the film is visible. That doesn't bother me, but it may be an issue for more aesthetically-minded people.

J'ai suivi exactement les instructions mais le ruban adhésif double face ne maintient pas le film en place tout autour de la bordure, nous ne pouvons donc pas obtenir le plein effet de l'isolation. C’est domage.

TLDR: After using this product to secure my home, my energy bill dropped significantly I moved into a small 20 yr old townhome in Nov 2019, around 1500 sq ft. I was surprised to get my first heating bill (I live in Richmond BC, by gas via Fortis BC). It was way beyond any utility bill I have paid. A year later I decided to install this window insulation kit and you will see in my attachment that my energy used dropped signifcantly. To put things in perspective, remember that in 2019/2020 Jan and Feb it was still ok to go to work and travel so we were barely home and I had the heat down during the day; whereas 2020 we are home all day and needing heat as well. The average temp for both years were 5 celcius in January 2019 and 2020 with 4 celcius in Feb 2019 and 5 celcius in Feb 2020. Overall, I highly recommend this product to those who want to insulate their home better. Especially those that are older with single pane windows.

Very inexpensive way to help warm the house. The films really make a difference! It is a bit challenging to peel the tape, though. I found ripping it a little helps.
