The package comes with a paper cut out diagram. I haven't actually used it because I didn't want to cut a hole in my tarp yet since I trailer my boat with the tarp on. The top part of the vent unscrews and has teeth like barbs that hold it in place in order to keep it from sliding around. In order to use the support pole venting feature you have to cut the hole. The teeth keep the tarp from sliding down the pole if it's windy **Q: I already have a cover but poles are plain 1/2" conduit. What is the top diameter of these adjustable poles?** A: I do not recommend them. They bend very easy and definitely are not worth the money. I would send you a picture but already through them out. Don't waste your money. **Q: How do you assemble the pole?** A: No assembly. Just push the round top onto the pole. I did not cut a hole in my boat cover as instructed. I just place it where I need it to support the cover so as not to have a valley of water on the cover when it rains. I bought a couple of these in different sizes for my 18 foot speedboat. I recently had brand new snap-on covers made (one for the cockpit and one for the bow). After having used this pole system with my previous cover, I did not hesitate to install it on on the new cover. Installation is a complete breeze--measure the right size hole, cut, and simply screw the vent onto the cover. The adjustment on the poles is stellar--simply release the latch and slide the pole up/down.For me, the pole base is the real winner here. I keep my boat slipped in the water April-->October. It is imperative that the pole stays upright or else the whole purpose of have a support pole goes out the window and water is likely to run into the boat.
