You can use #8 nails or 1 1/4" Torx screws. I opted for the screws because, high up in the air on a ladder and because space to swing a hammer is limited, it is easier to drive the screw with a drill. Go to your hardware store and buy the hardened steel Torx bit which will literally drive thousands of screws. The softer steel Torx bits that come with a set of bits will get rounded off fairly easily. Also, get the magnetic attachment that expands and collapses to hold the screws so you don't keep dropping them.

This says to install 2 on either side of the rafter, if you use 1 1/2 nails wouldn’t the nails go into each other if it’s on both sides?

That would seem to be the case. My install was with screws and I only put on one side of the rafter.

Will this work for connecting two 2"x 4"s at right angles? Maybe if i bend them over the top and/or bottom?

No. You need a T bracket for right angle

are you required to install one on each side of the rafter? 2 total on each rafter?

No. If you try, you would be nailing into the first connector’s nails! You should look up your local building code to be sure of the correct connector type and nail length.
