My waist is 29" and I bought these in a 28. They are pretty much a perfect fit - not overly tight. It does of course depend on how tight you want them. I tend to leave my shirts untucked. Be aware that the material is quite stretchy - much more so than jeans with 98% cotton and 2% elastane. I also have a pair of 3301 slim fitting jeans in a 30" waist, which I bought a year or so ago, but they are much too big for me. Some brands fit me fine in a 30. The legs from the knees down are fairly narrow. Originally ordered dark blue in the sale, on arrival and trying them on I felt they were such a good buy that I ordered another pair in black, which I have washed twice and no fading as can be the case with some black jeans. As other reviewers have said they are stretchy and come up big, I am usually size 32 waist but ordered 31 and they are a perfect fit.
