There is an ecstasy that marks the summit of life, and beyond which life cannot rise. And such is the paradox of living, this ecstasy comes when one is most alive, and it comes as a complete forgetfulness that one is alive. The domesticated life of a powerful St. Bernard-Shepherd mix named Buck is quickly turned on end when he is stolen away from his master and put to work as a sled dog in Alaska. His once life of luxury turns into a life of survival and adaptation as he learns the ways of the wilderness. Set in the Klondike region of Canada during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush, The Call of the Wild showcases the transformation of a canine as he learns to adapt to what life has given him, fair or not. Review: A wonderful story! - Jack London was long considered the greatest American author and this is his masterpiece. I gave it to a friend's middle schooler for Christmas and she has read it through twice in the past week. A truly great read. Review: 11/10 - An amazing book! Definitely worth every penny!

Recommend!
Great book for young readers. We homeschool and got this book for a reading section and was very age appropriate for a 3rd grade reader to work on reading comprehension.

A Tale of Awakened Genetic Memory
More than an adventure story, a lyric prose poem about the spiritual memory stored in the code of every life on Earth.

A Great Read Alone or With Parent
I read Jack London Books in elementary school so I sent this book to my youngest grandson hopping he will enjoy the saga in his spare time.

Good, but not as realistic as White Fang
This book was good, but I found it got cartoonish when Mercedes and her brother and husband appeared. It took me out of the story into TBE realms of the Three Stooges. Maybe Jack London met people like this in the Klondike, but it seemed unrealistic. As a dog lover, I was surprised the Buck so soon forgot the Judge who gave him a good life. Our Lab cried every morning when my husband left for work...in eleven years he somehow didn't learn that Tim came home within eight hours!

Beautiful
I read this book on line after being recommended by a friend. I loved it so much I bought the book. It is just beautiful. Even the ending, which could have been trite or really sad, was neither and it is just one of the most lovely reads ever. I thoroughly recommend it.
