General Aviation Aircraft Design, Second Edition , continues to be the engineer’s best source for answers to realistic aircraft design questions. The book has been expanded to provide design guidance for additional classes of aircraft, including seaplanes, biplanes, UAS, high-speed business jets, and electric airplanes. In addition to conventional powerplants, design guidance for battery systems, electric motors, and complete electric powertrains is offered. The second edition contains new chapters: Thrust Modeling for Gas Turbines Longitudinal Stability and Control Lateral and Directional Stability and Control These new chapters offer multiple practical methods to simplify the estimation of stability derivatives and introduce hinge moments and basic control system design. Furthermore, all chapters have been reorganized and feature updated material with additional analysis methods. This edition also provides an introduction to design optimization using a wing optimization as an example for the beginner. Written by an engineer with more than 25 years of design experience, professional engineers, aircraft designers, aerodynamicists, structural analysts, performance analysts, researchers, and aerospace engineering students will value the book as the classic go-to for aircraft design. The printed book is now in color, with 1011 figures and illustrations! Presents the most common methods for conceptual aircraft design Clear presentation splits text into shaded regions, separating engineering topics from mathematical derivations and examples Design topics range from the "new" 14 CFR Part 23 to analysis of ducted fans. All chapters feature updated material with additional analysis methods. Many chapters have been reorganized for further help. Introduction to design optimization is provided using a wing optimization as an example for the beginner Three new chapters are offered, two of which focus on stability and control. These offer multiple practical methods to simplify the estimation of stability derivatives. The chapters introduce hinge moments and basic control system design Real-world examples using aircraft such as the Cirrus SR-22 and Learjet 45 Review: Light Reading - Got it for a course. Just what you expect. Was new in plastic and not damaged. Review: Application of knowledge, not theory - The author presents their career long wealth of knowledge working in industry. If you are looking for an application based book, I can think of no other book with exception the Dr. Roskam’s series which provides detail rich explanations and tailored to the efforts of designing of an aircraft. My office collection has every book of aircraft design written in the last 100 years. This is by far the most used book in my library for aircraft design with exception of Bruhn, which is more detail design than conceptual design. Many books in the past several decades are very much high level theory based books. Theory texts are great for a broad understanding, but this does not help when you are burdened with the task of executing on said knowledge. This book provides steps, examples, and demonstrates the value our learning mathematics. This has gotten me back into the math books to freshen up. Love it! My only request is that the publisher had spent a few more dollars and used better printer ink and paper. The binding is fairly weak. I would have paid an extra $100-$200 to get a better quality manufacturing of this text. Will need to order another just to keep a fresh copy on the shelf that is not so heavily worn as this one. Hope the author continues refining this text for future editions. To get the most out of the book I would recommend taking a course in Microsoft Excel for Engineers, become familiar with Visual Basic for Applications, and freshen up on your mathamatics. The process of designing my own aircraft I have begun to enjoy coding as now I have a reason to use the knowledge. I wish I could have had the opportunity to take the authors course. The author reminds me of Dr. Bruhn teaching at Purdue after the 2nd War.

Book remarkable. Book binding quality is poor.
The book is amazing. The work made by the author is remarkable. The frustration is the book binding quality. It's pretty poor. The book is so thick and heavy that the binding doesn't last long. My copy arrived already damaged (it seems to me that was shipped already damaged) so I returned it and ask a refund. I will probably go with the digital version. Thanks.

Masterful
I only got it long enough to skim through it, but this is a tomb and it has marvelous illustrations and graphs. It seems to cover every facet of airplanes and aviation. Basically it seems like the whole course of study for a degree from embry riddle university! I have My home work cut out for me, but it looks like it’s going to be great! Also, it has lots of references in it so this can act like an index to the more detailed aviation literature when you want to dig into something deeper. Even at this stage I feel confident recommending it.

Worth Every Penny
It's hardbound and 5-6cm thick. Includes theory and practical application, equations and real word pictures. It's perfect and we'll organized. Print quality is good, but as another reviewer put it, I'd pay more for "coffee table book" quality of paper and ink. My vendor packed the book extremely well.

New adopted book
It's great like the first edition. Will adopt this for my design class this fall. Information is for GA aircraft but some methods can be modified for other aircraft.

Highly recommended!
If you'd plan to buy just a single book about conceptional aircraft design, this should be the one... Highly recommended!

Valió la pena
Excelente libro.
