**Q: Is this a “compound” sliding miter saw? what’s the difference if it’s not? tools aren’t my thing so i sure could use some help with this. thanks!**
A: "Compound" means it can make a bevel cut and a miter cut in one cut.

This particular saw is a dual bevel saw, which means the saw head can tilt both left and right, making bevel cuts from top left to bottom right, or from top right to bottom left. So visualize a flat board, whereby the saw comes down perpendicular to the board but angled left or right. 

A miter cut is established by turning the handle you see in front either left or right which changes the angle of the entire saw head in relation to the board to be cut. Visualize the flat board again. A miter cuts through the board diagonally but with the saw blade at a straight angle with the board. 

The fact that this saw can make a miter cut while making a bevel cut at the same time, makes it a "compound" miter saw -- two types of cuts in one cut.

For completeness, the saw is also a "sliding" miter saw. This means that, instead of merely cutting in a top down motion, you can pull the saw head toward you and then let it slide back in the extended groove as it is cutting. The sliding ability means the saw has a greater reach and can thus cut wider boards.

Most miter saws are "compound". Some are "sliding" some are not. All can make "bevels", but most will be single bevel (usually left), not dual bevel such as this one. All can make miter cuts left and right.

**Q: how long is this miter saw front to back will it fit on my 27" deep workbench?**
A: Mine just arrived, and I just measured it because I'm designing a mobile work station for it, so here goes. Going by the footprint (this is important because the miter saw head of course swings left to right and sticks out in both front and back), the width in front and back is 23.5". The depth both left and right is 16.5". Each foot has a hole in it to bolt/screw it down. Measuring from the center of those holes it's 20.5" wide and 13" deep. The height of the table (where you put the wood to be cut) is 3.75". Hope that helps.

Very pleased with the saw, cuts straight and square. Needed no adjustments out of the box, but wise to check to make sure everything is square. Has sufficient adjustments to ensure squareness. Appears to be solidly built, and of very reasonable quality for a prosumer saw. Out of the box everything moved smoothly, and precisely. The saw blade recess is fairly wide, so would recommend getting some saw miter kerf tape, but this is common with most miter saws. Did not use the blade that came with the saw, replacing it with a higher tooth count crosscut blade, but the blade did not appear to be that bad. The clamp is excellent, holds fast, and easy to lock. The shadow line is excellent, although it is either on or off full time not engaged when pressing the trigger. Not a big deal since it is powered by supply voltage. The handle on top for carrying is nice, as is the multi-handed operational handle. Overall feels sturdy and should last. Dust collection kind of sucks, but that seems to be common to most miter saws. The cut depth adjustment stop seems kind of cheap (essentially a bolt that limits cut depth), but it does work so no big deal. Lastly the blade takes a while to stop, seems there is no blade brake, but the guard deploys quickly so again not a show stopper. Overall seems to be a very good saw, for a very good price.
