What is the difference between a straight and curved grignette/lame?

Supposedly a curved lame helps you get a little lip on the edge of your score, sort of how baguettes have that pretty raised crunchy edge. I'm not good enough to know the difference in practice though and just find it annoying.

I was hoping you'd have one with a curved blade for baguettes.  Might you make one in the future?

Hi Darla,

Thanks for your interest in the lame. You’re in luck. This lame IS curved.  
I realize that it is not obvious by the pictures. My mistake. I will have to add another picture  in the near future that makes it obvious.

Also, it was recently brought to my attention that if you add a small washer (or two) under the blade, the lame can quickly and easily become a straight blade lame.

It’s like having two lames in one.

Question 3

It says it's dishwasher safe, but can I put the whole unit or the screw needs to come out - not sure if every part is stainless

Hi Andres and thanks for the question.

The whole lame, including the Thumbscrew or Thumbnut  is made of food grade 430 Stainless steel.  Therefore, it can be placed in the dishwasher.  A fully stainless lame was one of my design criteria as I am not a fan of plastic or wood utensils.

With that in mind, I can say that I do not put my lame in the dishwasher for a couple reasons.
- It typically does not really get very dirty so I just wipe it off
- things in the dishwasher get bounced around and the blade could get dulled by hitting other things

But, its your choice.  The lame will certainly not be hurt by putting it in the dishwasher.

Question 4

what is the comfort coating - some type of oil, plastic or other chemical?  Why blue? Is there some kind of colorant added?

Hi,  The lame comes without any coating or plastic.  I am completely at a loss as to what would be on the lame.  I have never heard of anything or had any issues like this mentioned.
