Are there spots mold can build up?** A: I put the whole thing in the dishwasher once a week or so, and we haven't had any issues with mold. My daughter has used it daily for 9 months or so. I'm sure mold could develop around the straw if you don't remove it periodically to clean. **Q: If left open and tipped over, does the straw prevent (or minimize) spilling?** A: Not really. There's no valve, it's just a straw. When you close the top there is a little plastic piece that you slide over which locks the top down.
