I bought this new Fotga DP500 II system to add to my being able to leave a quick release receiver plate on my Steadicam, 12' Crane, Kessler Dolly and Tripod. I wanted to be able to just release the the camera very quickly (with base plate on it) and mount it onto the next device and be up and running within a couple of minutes. As I have grown my business I want to be able to mount up to three different cameras on the the above mentioned devices and have a Camera Operator for each camera. After I bought the new Fotga DP500 II I noticed that there were some cosmetic changes but did not realize that there was a major change in the thickness of the bottom dovetail of the camera plate! I went to Arizona with it and ruddily found out that the new camera plate will not slide into the older base plates! THIS IS IMPORTANT: the old Camera Plates will fit the the new Fotga DP500 II receivers, but the new Fotga DP500 II Camera Plates will not fit the older receivers! Why that change???? I have no idea as they are using an old Arca Style universal standard. BE WARNED: Those of you who own an older first generation (Fotga DP500 I) the new camera plate (Fotga DP500 II) will not slide into the receiver plate! I repeat that as to eliminate any confusion of the issue. As you have probably deduced I have built my quick release system around the Fotga DP500. They are an excellent product and very light weight and machined well. To that I would give it 5 stars. Now with this latest version II If your adding it to an older existing Fotga DP500 system I give the lowest rating of 1 star because of incompatibility. There was nothing in the current description of an incompatibility issue. Buy the new DP500 II and you"ll be fine if that is all you need. But here is where I got irked about the seller: Fotga Store. They sent me an email in response to my complaint sending me a link to their store to "find" and buy another product of theirs that might solve the problem... They know there is no other product other than the DP500 that can work with itself. I was insulted, as I had asked them to please find me a first generation camera plate so I could have every plate fit all receivers. They said it was unavailable. My guess and feeling is, they did not try. They are a distributor. They have the resources. I truly believe with a little effort on their part they could make it happen as it has not been that long since the new version has been in the market. You might have asked why didn’t I return it? Well as with any piece of hardware I have for my camera rigs I have customized them as to make them more efficient for my workflow. I had already drilled and threaded 1/4” 20 holes in the bottom of the receiver plate to make them mountable to my 51/2" Manfrotto Long Camera Plate for adjustable weight distribution for video. Remember in all fairness, my review here is based on the fact that the version 2 DP500 is not compatible with it’s last generation DP500.
