The DTI part has a travel of about 1.39mm which was OK for me. The base magnetic is fairly weak and if you don't have it on a completely flat steel surface the DTI alone will push it off. The coupling arm had retaining clips on the ball joints, these were sharp and scratched the ball joint. I disassembled and filed the sharp edges off and it was OK. But not really something anyone should be doing on a new item.
