Mix your own nectar 1/4 c cane sugar to 1 c of water. Is this true?** A: It's not good for anyone. I really wish people would actually look at the ingredients and stop saying the red is "from hibiscus flowers" when it says in their ingredients red #40, which is a toxic artificial dye. Those dyes are actually banned in other countries. Making your own sugar water is the best for the birds and a better deal. **Q: Can somebody suggest why red dye is added to this? is there any valid reason to add something potentially toxic to this mix?** A: Absolutely not necessary and SO frustrating that people keep purchasing this garbage! For all the people suggesting the red comes from hibiscus, do some reading of the ingredient list and pay attention to red #40 being listed. Other countries ban the use of artificial colors because they are toxic to humans and animals. My own child is allergic to red #40 and I have seen the side effects cause so many problems before we figured it out. Most feeders have some red on them which attracts the birds just fine.. then mix your own food (four parts hot water, to one part sugar - ex. 1 cup water and 1/4 cup sugar) I wish people would educate themselves about these things and not just blindly purchase something out of "convenience" with no regard to the impact. **Q: The Cornell Lab of Ornithology strongly recommends against using red dye in feeders. this goes on, stop using this color so i can buy?** A: I stopped using this product a while ago. Per Audubon Society, I make my own mixture of 3/4c water and 1/4C sugar. This mixture has attracted more hummingbirds to my feeder than ever before. Keeping the hummingbirds healthy and happy is my goal. **Q: What small bird red on head, green featherd and yellow.stomach** A: I do not know.
