Is there someone who could talk me through installing this hood? Is it more effective to attach to firebox or the brick above? Help is needed!

it can be attached either way. All depends on what kind of fireplace/mantle you have. I attached mine right to the firebox because I didn't want to drill into the bricks.

what are the hood's expandable dimentions starting from the smallest size

It can be as small as 24 inches and as long as 48 inches at least. There are two slots in each end piece to stabilize.

What are the actual measurements of the hood? Looking at it from the side when installed what is the bottom to top measurement?

The back part that goes against the wall is 3.5" high.
