Between 1560 and 1599, The Geneva Bible was providentially unleashed upon a dark, discouraged, downtrodden English speaking world. Just when it looked as if the Machiavellian, Divine Right kings - such as the Tudors of England - were about to drive Christendom back to the days of Caesar worship, a Bible appeared that set the stage for a Christian Reformation of life and culture the likes of which the world had never seen. By the time of the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588, just 28 years after the first printing of the Geneva Bible, it was already being said of the English that they were becoming a people of the Book. The results of a people reading and obeying the Word of God were the explosion of faith, character, the first missionary movement in history, literature, economic blessing, and political and religious freedom. The Pilgrims brought the 1599 Geneva Bible with them when they arrived in the New World in 1620. All but forgotten in our day, this version of the Bible was the most widely read and influential English Bible of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. A superb translation, the 1599 Geneva Bible was the product of the best Protestant scholars of the day and became the Bible of choice for many of the greatest writers and thinkers of that time. Men such as William Shakespeare, John Bunyan, and John Milton used the Geneva Bible in their writings. William Bradford also cited the Geneva Bible in his famous book Of Plymouth Plantation. The Geneva Bible is unique among all other Bibles. It was the first Bible to use chapters and numbered verses and became the most popular version of its time because of the extensive marginal notes. These more than 300,000 notes were included to explain and interpret the scriptures for the common people. Tolle Lege Press has partnered with White Hall Press to release of a beautiful new edition of the historic 1599 Geneva Bible - the 2010 Patriot's Edition! The Patriot's Edition of the 1599 Geneva Bible is the same Scripture, word for word, that the Pilgrims brought to America nearly 400 years ago. This new edition, however, features: * A prayer by George Washington, which begins... O eternal and everlasting God, i presume to present myself this morning before thy divine majesty, beseeching thee to accept of my humble and hearty thanks, that it hath pleased thy great goodness to keep and preserve me the night past from all the dangers poor mortals are subject to, and has given me sweet and pleasant sleep, whereby i find my body refreshed and comforted for performing the duties of this day, in which i beseech thee to defend me from all perils of body and soul... * The following historical documents, which are based upon Biblical principles: * The Magna Carta * The Mayflower Compact * The Declaration of Independence * The Articles of Confederation * The Constitution of the United States * Amendments to the U.S. Constitution * Rules of Civility & Decent Behavior * Word-for-word accuracy with the 1599 Geneva Bible * Original cross references * Modern spelling * Original study notes by Reformers * Old English Glossary * Easy-to-read standard size print (approx. 11pt) * Size: 6.5 x 9.5 * Hardback * Approx: 1,400 pages

They need to know how great this country is and what it really stands for
All I can is WOW. Couldn't believe what is in this book. I've been sharing it with friends and family. There is so much history of our country and its foundations all in one book, plus a reaffirmation of what we believe. Every time I read it I think about our forefathers and what they had to endure, their guts, faith and determination.Sure wish this had been available when I was growing up many years ago. Should be required reading for ALL of our children!!! They need to know how great this country is and what it really stands for. God bless America.Besides being so wonderful to read, it is a great resource while reading other versions. It's the precursor of the KJV. It makes me feel so dog gone rich. Blessed are those who read it.

The most honest translation the most honorable
I give this 5 stars, this is the best Bible ever.So glad that they brought back the geneva bible , because I feel it honors the reformers of that time. I'm also happy they updated some of the words but have kept the flow of the poetic style.

1599 Geneva Bible: What a Great Find
I first heard about this Bible from Kirk Cameron. It was the Bible that the pilgrims brought to America. What a great translation and the footnotes are very informative. This Patriot's Edition has the Constitution, Declaration of Independence and other important documents from the founding of our country. I especially loved the prayer from George Washington that is located in the front of the Bible. A must have for the Bible scholar! I highly recommend it to anyone that loves God's Word!!

1599 Geneva Bible: Patriot's Edition
The review may move to a 5 star, but it takes a while to study, and compare the text. I started with well known scripture, such as the 23rd. Psalm, and then the Lord's Prayer, it is very interesting, and I cannot find anyone who I would consider a "Bibile" scholar that is familiar with this early translation. The Patriot edition is really neat to have all these wonderful historical documents together, and Washington's prayer is humble and eloquent. I think anyone who loves Bible study will find this Bible a worth while addition to your library.

Interesting marginal notes
This Bible is fun to have on hand for comparison with the AV largely because the AV was specifically commissioned to be clean of marginal notes, whereas the 1599 Geneva is full of notes, allowing insight into early Protestant exegesis. For example, Matt 24:22 has a note that acknowledges the idea that Jesus had mixed some first century Jewish prophecy with end-of-Christian-era prophecy, a view that is not common today but is borne out in the text itself, especially when a horizontal harmony is consulted ( AV version). My personal view is that Jesus answered the disciples' second question first, and finished speaking of His second coming. This solves the "this generation" question without resorting to full preterism. My view is generally Historicist/ Covenantal, and that fits nicely with many of the Geneva notes. The contrast with Futurism and Dispensationalism, which is currently mainstream, can be instructional. It is also interesting to have handy copies of the world's great freedom documents.

Everything in one book
The 1599 Geneva Bible with the patriots items is a great informative book. It has all the founding fathers basics. I had never read the May Flower Compact or the Magna Carta but now I have. I had heard references to both documents but never read them personally. This is a wonderful book which every wanting to understand what went on during the founding of the USA should read. It provides a firm basis of the foundation for the Constitution and Declaration of Independence. I only wish the book had been available earlier. Those studying government or constitutional law should have these documents at hand.
