I want to use this in a stand-alone one room dance studio with only one window. If it's very hot outside, will this really keep it cool inside?

It’s not an AC unit so it will only be as cool (or slightly less hot) as the air from the source. That being said you could use this fan on Exhaust to suck hot air out and use a tower fan to create a breeze in the room. But to cool a room on a 90+ degree day, I’d recommend a window AC. This fan will circulate air tho, so it’s not a bad place to start.

Can you use the fan without the thermostat feature? I don't want it going on and off all night long.

I think the other replies were with older models? I just purchased this model and there's no issue with opting out of the thermostat feature. As noted in the instructions, to get to continous air flow, you just keep clicking the button through the modes (first you click throught the various thermostat temperatures, and then you get to "high" or "low" as options. If you click high or low either one will stay on continously. Both options are extremely quiet. It sounds like the person who had a louid nose on the low setting had a defective fan.

Can this fan be turned on it's side? My window is only 22" wide but is 36" high.

I think it would be possible. My only concern would be stability. The top of the fan is about 2" wide which helps anchor the fan into place when the window is closed. The sides are much thinner and I would be worried about the fan tipping over or the sides possibly cracking b/c they are flimsier. That all being said, you could certainly McGyver it into working out.
