A third release of Glen Elgin for the Annual Diageo special releases series of 2017 Aged for 18 years in Ex-Bodega and refill European oak butts and made from two batches of malt using two different yeast strains. Only 5352 bottles released and bottled at natural cask strength of 54.8% ABV A fresh, voluptous aroma and layers of fruit make this an enticing dram, with well balanced oak providing just enough spice. Nose: Malted milk biscuits, fresh herbs, toffee apple, cinnamon spice, green fruit salad, vanilla doughnuts. Palate: Buttery sweet pastry, poached pears, apple bon bons, fresh herbs and grassy barley mid palate, aromatic spices merging into waxy, stock syrup mouthfeel. Some nuances of marzipan, nougart and breakfast rolls with apricot jam evident too. Finish: Oily and herbal with waxy orchard fruits and warming spice, perfumed green fruit and peppery anise oak. A distinguished example of a top class rated malt with a highly sophisticated, classic Speyside taste from a distillery that deserves to be better known.
